What a glorious book - the writing is superb, intelligent, perceptive, humane - coupled with Paolo Wood's exquisite photography. I would say it is the best book on Haiti that I have ever read - I have a particular interest in Haiti that goes back to the 1970's. I am aware of the literature and photography coming from that rich country - this book is an extraordinary collaboration, a perfect balance between words and images - they reinforce each other in a dynamic way. Congratulations.

Today many peoples "knowledge" of Haiti is derived from sound bites and newspaper articles all too often based on the sensational. The consensus after the earthquake of January 12th, 2010, given the international commitment of unprecedented levels of material and financial aid, which cumulatively exceeded Haitian GNP, was "break the mould and start over". However almost four years later the objective commentator is left to ask, "why apparently has so relatively little been accomplished?"
This book methodically reveals the fallacy, danger and superficiality of the "quick fix". In a juxtaposition of text and photographs drawn from their many years of experience living and working in the country, Woods and Robert provide the reader, often through the use of subtle if not acerbic wit, a basis upon which to develop a response to this question himself. One is left with the realisation that an in-depth understanding of "what is and what has been?" is a precursor to any consideration of "what might be"."

I got this book in English (there's a French version as well). It's a very different take on Haiti than what you usually read in the papers. Photographer Paolo Woods and journalist Arnaud Robert have covered this country extensively over the past years. Some of their encounters have made great stories for Western media outlets, others are simply the reflection of their love for this country and its people. When a State melts away, this is what's left to see, and it's fascinating as hell.
