4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

In the dedication to her readers, Lois Lenski wrote: “For all the children who asked: ‘Is there a Mama Small and Baby Small?’ Yes, Papa Small has a family. Here they are—with my love. Your friend, Lois Lenski.” Children will love seeing Papa Small and his family do many of the same things that their families do.

Loved this book...brought back childhood memories. First thing I did was read it to my granddaughter?
I am a big fan of Lois Lenski and all of her books and have been trying to collect as many as I can.
The last page of the book had Papa Small cut out if it , but reminded me of the book I had growing up which had a lot of crayon marks and torn pages...love it!

I'm about to have my first child at 37. My dad read this book to me over and over. It might not culturally be relative to many. Truly American depiction of family life. Yet it touches on universal values of what family life should be (my opinion). Great book that ill be reading to my child.

More than any other in Lois Lenski's Small series, "Papa Small" will strike almost any modern family as utterly archaic. Papa gets up in the morning and goes off to work while Mama stays home and cleans and cooks. The whole family drives into town to do Saturday grocery shopping. On Sunday, they go to church.
You may find this book charming and it might be a good jumping-off point for a discussion with your child about how your own family differs from the Smalls. But unless you are a Lenski completist, I'd stick to Cowboy Small, the Little Farm, the Little Fire Engine, or the Little Train...those are the best.

For very personal reasons that I don't want to bore you with this book has a very, very significant sentimental value!
I love the book and it means so much to me!
I was the only person in my school library who checked the book out.
So, seeing a book like it and having it in my hands gives me some kind of comofort!

My kids love this book. There is no plot. Just activities of daily living in a family. It is very sweet.

Absolutely delightful. Grandkids love it, as they do all the Small books.

Absolutely wonderful! We read Papa Small countless times when my children were small. Just thinking about that sweet time years ago makes me smile now. Papa Small is probably my personal favorite of all the delightful Small books written by Lois Lenski.

In an upside-down world gone mad, Papa Small is a book that is sane, safe, and satisfying to share with our children and grandchildren. Papa Small offers a world of normalcy to all of us. And normal, natural, healthy and right ways of living are what we who are caring and responsible adults should be teaching our children. This book gives children what they crave -- a story about living with their natural mother and their natural father together in a loving and caring home. This simple book could be used as a textbook -- it is that good -- showing children, young adults and expectant parents how to live according to Nature and Nature's God's plan.

The original editions of all Lois Lenski's Small books are the best if you can find them and afford them. (Note: The pictures in many of the more recently published books have been colorized. I have never seen revision improve a book. And I believe it to be disrespectful and even criminal).

Papa Small is a good book that is good for the children in your life. Feel confident that this book will help and not harm your precious child. Thank you for your time!

I first "met" Papa Small 20 years ago when I was babysitting my neighbor's 2 boys. She had a copy that was her own copy when she was a child. It was the black and white version, and she said it was one of her favorite books. It charmed me so much in its simplicity and gentleness, that I got a copy at the libary to read to my little girl; also brought home Cowboy Small, Policeman Small, etc. and since that day, my children have loved Mr. Small in his many varied roles. Lois Lenski's books are treasures for adults and children alike. Years ago before the internet, we tried and tried to find our own copy of Papa Small but we had no luck. We finally made a photocopy of a library copy (which was a French/English version from Canada by the way- in French he is Papa Petit) and colored it, laminated it, bound it with little rings, and we finally had our own copy! Now, we also own this reissue. Yes, they are all colorized now. Some people don't like that. I don't mind it, and in some ways I actually like them better. If you are a serious Lenski collector, you are better off finding originals on ebay. For the rest of us, these affordable reissues are a dream come true. I have yet to meet a child who doesn't like a Mr. Small book. Lois Lenski's books are such a refreshment...I am glad that we can still find such traditional books for children in this crazy, fast-paced, morally de-sensitized, ever-changing world. I am a Christian and live a traditional life, so the family life depicted in this book was not an offense to me.

The seller did not pretend this book was in perfect condition. It was just as described and I am very pleased with it. My granddaughter loves it and our last one is a little worse for wear after 40 years use.
