In the very first page of this volume, we have been transported to June of 2016. The girls come into contact with on of their 40 year old selves. The 12 year old version makes comments that bother her 40 year old self (we still live in this town, we still work for the paper) and asks questions (what happened to Dad, are we sick) of the type that any of us would make in this situation.
The girls marvel at flat screen television and wonder what language people are talking in when they hear "an extraordinary vine posted by twitter use @joanyfootball2." Their mall has been abandoned for over 10 years and they are put off by the nasty graffiti in their town (note for young readers - there was awful grafiti in the 70s and 80s too, and one need only to look up photos the NY subway system at the time to confirm that).
Cliff Chiang's art is good. The creator page in the back provides the middle school pictures of all the creators with a year book like entry. Very cool.
This is volume 2, it picks up right where volume 1 left off.
It raises the stakes (especially for two of the characters), explains some things and raises more questions about others, and advances the story. It's looking very much like Time Bandits mixed with Stand By Me where the characters travel through time but don't always know exactly when they're going. The characters are interesting, and their friendship develops.
I'm on board for this, and looking forward to volume three.
