PEN CASING: The shaft and casing for the old set has a fluted barrel and a white holder for the felt tip. The new barrels are smooth with a clear holder for the felt tip. I thought I would dislike this change in texture at first, but I have not found it to affect my writing in any negative way and I still find them easy to hold onto. I actually really like the changes. I purchased the 16-pack with wallet case. I did not realize that "wallet" meant that it comes with its own reusable plastic holder. I have shown this in the images and I love this feature!
TIP: The tip of my old set and new set are both medium thickness. The width is still very similar as you can see from the images.
SATURATION: Since my old set is, well, old, you can see from the text I wrote that they are starting to dry out a bit (especially the olive one). But hey! 10+ years and I am so pleased that these have lasted this long! I am super happy with the new set. You can see from the image that they obviously makes a smoother and more saturated line than my old set. They feel smoother to write with as well. I am also a LEFTY, so pen smearing is an issue with graphite pencils, gel pens, and other types of inks that don't dry to the paper immediately. These pens provide no smearing and are colorfast to page as soon as I write with them.
USAGE: I use them for note taking, calendar colorizing, old school letter writing, but mostly for drawing and creating custom typefaces for artwork and graphic design. Perhaps it just depends on what you need to use them for as to whether or not the change will bother you. For me, these pens are still my #1 brand. I have tried a number of other felt tip options and these are still the most awesome!

Sadly the times have changed and while Pilot Fineliners have remained the same great classic product, the PaperMate Flair has become an infinitely more inferior product that pales in comparison to the original. In short do not buy this pen if you're looking for a Papermate flair of the 80's and 90's and pre 2008 ish
Like many of the reviews before me....why change something that wasn't broken?
What you need to do is to go back to the original design. Get rid of the point guard and go back to the all felt bolder tip. (see photos below for comparison)
The original larger all felt tip (without the point guard) allowed for more expressive lines. One could vary the line from bold by using the side of the felt (which you can't do with the point guard) to a finer line by using the tip. Similar to a pencil this allowed you to sketch with both the sides and the point. By changing the full felt tip of the old design you have changed the superb sketching felt pen of old into a normal boring writing pen.
Like many other reviewers the ink load and intensity of this new design again pales in comparison to the original flair felt pens. From the get go they seem dried out.
So like many other viewers and colleagues we are all looking for other products to take the place of the once ubiquitous PaperMate Flair. Thankfully Pilot has stepped up to the plate and now has a "Sign pen" all felt tip pen, try it out. All in all I would still prefer having my good old Flair back. I only have a few left of the hundreds I have used. Also loved the ability to make a wash with a wet finger.
Now all that being said here are the differences between the old and new Flairs (a lot of sites provide pictures of the old ones but the descriptions are of the new Flairs. So beware)
* says PaperMate on shirt clip
* Overall the pen casing is glossy
* Felt pen tip was much larger with no plastic point guard
* Bottom of pen had a 1/2" tapered
* No writing down barrel of pen
* Larger more intense ink load
* doesn't say PaperMate on shirt clip
* Pen casing has Matt finish
* Felt tip much smaller and has plastic point guard
* Smaller tapered end missing
* Has writing down barrel of pen
* Brand new the tips seem dry and not as intense
NOTE: I also wanted to try out the ultra fine tip flair pens and got those as well, but those are extremely fine (I guess that's why they are "ultra fine"). The thing that I really like about the flair pens (MD point) is that they have a nice grip and they write smoothly. The only thing that I don't like necessarily like is the scratching sound that comes from it when I write with force- but then the solution to that is...don't write with force!
My advise: if you write small and separated- use a sharpie pen. If you write big/bubbly or normal( computer style) - use a medium tip flair pen. If you write cursive and write lightly - use the flair ultra fine tip pens.
