Because of this, I'm always searching for a good writing implement that will elevate my handwriting above its usual 3rd-Grader-Just-Learning-Cursive scrawl. My go-to is usually one of my drafting pens. They don't smudge and the way they work forces me to slow down a little and keep everything contained within the lines on the paper. Copic Multiliner is my current fave, although I have been using a Uni-Ball Signo that I thought worked very well and produced smooth clean lines.
Realistically, the only way to test a pen is to write with it, then write with a few others and see which one works best for your particular writing style. The only thing you can really test that's not specific to each writer is how smudge-resistant it is, and if the ink globs or the pen skids without delivering smooth ink lines. I grabbed the 4 pens I use most frequently, and did some writing to see which one came out on top in some head-to-head tests.
Bic Stick Pen - Standard of the industry, the one you write with at the bank or in hotel rooms. Smooth Writing - acceptable, occasional globs and thin/thick lines. Smudge Resistance - Poor, ink easily smudges for at least a minute after writing.
Uni-Ball Signo Micro 307 - Newer gel technology gives the smooth feel of ink with the crisp bright lines of gel. Smooth Writing - very good, extremely consistent lines no matter the pressure. Smudge Resistance - Moderate, ink smudges immediately after writing, but dries within 15 seconds.
Copic Multiliner - Essentially a glorified felt pen, these deliver ink in a radically different manner than your usual ball-point. Smooth Writing - Excellent when used correctly, perfectly consistent lines with no bleed or clumping. Smudge Resistance - Excellent, zero smudging even if you rub vigorously right after application.
Papermate Ink Joy Gel 0.7 - Newer gel technology gives smooth rolling with just the right resistance and crisp ink lines. Smooth Writing - Very Good, lines will exhibit some thickness changes depending on pen pressure, no globs or skidding. Smudge Resistance - Very Good, zero smudging when you rub a finger over the line right after application, will smudge slightly with vigorous rubbing.
I am extremely impressed with the Papermate Ink Joy. For me it's comfortable in my hand and has just the right weight and diameter. The ink line is smooth, but can be made bolder or finer depending on pen pressure. It doesn't pool or glob when you slow down. Where it really excels is smudge resistance. This would definitely be a great pen for left-handed writers as the ink dries instantly.
I've included two photos, first one showing a line of writing with each pen, second one showing smudge test which may not be visible with the low-quality images Amazon allows - if it doesn't show, what's actually on the paper shows the Bic smudges quite a bit, the Uni-Ball a little on the last 2 words, and no smudging at all on the Copic and Papermate.
I definitely recommend giving this Papermate InkJoy a try, it's a really good pen.
Dear Inkjoy Gel Pens,
As you may or may not know, I'm an avid pen-pal-writer (love my IGGPPC friends!) and Postcrosser. There is nothing worse than drafting a masterpiece of a letter, only to have ink smudges all over the back of your hand, or worse, smudged across the paper. No longer will I be limited to boring colors of smeared ink!! No longer will I be the laughing stock of Iggles** near and far! Thanks to you, my letters and postcards are more enjoyable to write, and (I hope) fun to read. The only quibble I have is that, when writing on a smooth/slick surface, such as a glossy postcard back, my impatience gets the best of me and I don't wait long enough for the ink to set. Mind you, it's only a matter of seconds, but I'm anxious to get the address slapped on there. It still doesn't change the way I feel about you. I carry you every where I go...you're always on my mind...in my heart, in my soul...you're the meaning in my life...you're the inspriation. (Sorry...had a little Delilah moment...)
An Office Supply Hoarder & Snail Mail Junkie
**None of these lovely people have EVER laughed at me, or any other pen pal for ink pen deficiencies. They are kind, caring, and wonderful pen pals!**
A couple of reasons. I like writing in small spaces - my planners (I use Erin Condren hourly, mostly, with some Happy Planners), and I put a lot of information in there. Small pen tips are a *must*. I need 0.5mm or smaller. The biggest issue with these pens is that their tips get clogged very easily, due to how small they are, and I lose my smooth writing ability. The Inkjoys do not appear to have these issues (most gel points don't, I've found). But gels do have a big negative - sometimes they take looooong to dry. So if I'm not careful, I get streaks and transfers. The Inkjoys seem to dry fairly quickly as well, which is impressive. They are most similar to the TULs that I just absolutely love so much, but come in more colors and have a more comfortable grip (plus is available at Amazon with Prime shipping :-) ). Definitely worth a try for planner/stationary geekery fans!
BUT...the price on these fluctuates rapidly. At the time of this review, an 8-pack of fine tip (my fave) multicolor pens was $15.98, when I bought them originally, they were about $9, and I've paid around that price a couple of times. The price seems to go up and down, so pay attention when you shop for them. I'm on to you, Amazon!
