A few months ago, I went to the supply cabinet at my office to grab a couple of my trusty paper mates. I popped open the box (not a whole lot of people go for the felt tip pens, so I usually open them up) and was very very surprised by what was inside. For as long as I've been around, paper mate pens were glossy colored, smooth, and had half millimeter lines that ran parallel to the shaft of the pen. I used to put my thumbnail in the grooves and spin the pen to make a "ZZZZIPPP" noise. These new pens though... they were not right. They're matte in color, the shaft is bare, with a very cheap quality screen print "Paper Mate" marking on it. I would bet my paycheck that the factory in Mexico where these pens now come from, make pens for 100 different companies. I'm sure they're all the same pen, with the only difference being the screenprinted name on each pen. My old paper mates had a white tip guard, with just the colored tip sticking out about a millimeter. These pens now have a clear tip guard and the tip sticks out about twice as far. I know, big deal right? Well, yes, it is a big deal. Now, if you press too hard, the tip will deform, and the pen will be useless.Read more ›
PEN CASING: The shaft and casing for the old set has a fluted barrel and a white holder for the felt tip. The new barrels are smooth with a clear holder for the felt tip. I thought I would dislike this change in texture at first, but I have not found it to affect my writing in any negative way and I still find them easy to hold onto. I actually really like the changes. I purchased the 16-pack with wallet case. I did not realize that "wallet" meant that it comes with its own reusable plastic holder. I have shown this in the images and I love this feature!
TIP: The tip of my old set and new set are both medium thickness. The width is still very similar as you can see from the images.
SATURATION: Since my old set is, well, old, you can see from the text I wrote that they are starting to dry out a bit (especially the olive one). But hey! 10+ years and I am so pleased that these have lasted this long! I am super happy with the new set. You can see from the image that they obviously makes a smoother and more saturated line than my old set. They feel smoother to write with as well. I am also a LEFTY, so pen smearing is an issue with graphite pencils, gel pens, and other types of inks that don't dry to the paper immediately. These pens provide no smearing and are colorfast to page as soon as I write with them.
USAGE: I use them for note taking, calendar colorizing, old school letter writing, but mostly for drawing and creating custom typefaces for artwork and graphic design. Perhaps it just depends on what you need to use them for as to whether or not the change will bother you.Read more ›
These pens fit every criterion! The writing quality is very good, and even though they don't claim to be waterproof, I did drip some water on a page that I had written and there was very, very little smearing.
The only minor complaint that I have is that in the pictured item, in addition to a colored cap, each pen also has a colored base. In the item I received, only the cap is colored and the entire body of the pen is a solid silver color. I think the colored base is prettier, and it makes it easier to see which pen you're grabbing if they end up upside down in your coat pocket.
If you're looking for a great porous-tip pen, I recommend either these, or the Sakura Pigma Micron pens. The Sakuras come in more colors and a whole range of tip sizes, and they remain my favorite pens of all time. But these Paper Mates are very good!
