David Wyman, a non-Jewish professor of history at the Univ. of Mass. has done enormous research on the American response to the Nazi assault on the Jews. The result has been three books - this being the chronological first part of a shocking and dreadful tale. For what Wyman uncovered is so disconcerting that it makes it impossible to ever again see FDR's administration with the same degree of admiration one might previously have had. The story of high officials, abetted by a heartless Congress, who not only would not aid a single Jew in escaping Hitler's clutches, but who erected high obstacles to their coming to America is an ugly revelation that makes the reader ashamed of that history. And outraged, even though Wyman presents his story factually and unemotionally. I suppose we still don't want to acknowledge that shameful history; otherwise, Wyman would be better known and his books would not be practically out of print.
(note, by the way, that Amazon can't even get the title right - it's "America & the Refugee Crisis." "American" doesn't even make any sense.)
