Editorial Reviews

On 'Paradigm Shift', Korn chose not to repeat the dub step/rock fusion of their previous album The Path of Totality, but remained intent on keeping the sounds fresh and new. On the new album, they promise to mesh the classic dual guitar attack of James 'Munky' Shaffer and Brian 'Head' Welch (returning for the first time since the band's 2003 album Take A Look In The Mirror), with an all new approach to the integration of electronics.

CD/DVD Deluxe edition contains two extra bonus tracks and DVD documentary 'Reconciliation'

Korn have long given up on what the critics think or what direction their fans think they should be heading in, even with the return of much missed original member Brian "Head" Welch Korn are continuing to experiment with new sounds in many ways showing that their last album the dup-step influenced "the Path Of Totality" was not a one off. Jonathan Davies has even go so far saying that the decision to release the first single "Never Never" which itself would not have sounded out of place on "The Path of Totality" was just to mess with people's heads.

"The Paradigm Shift" is Korns 11th studio album and the first one to feature founding member Brian Welch since 2003's "Take A Look In The Mirror", it features a mish mash of styles from the heavy pounding of "What We Do" to the death vocal driven "Love & Meth" which see Davis twist his vocal range from the straightforward approach to a death roar. Album opener "Prey For Me" at times sees Korn dip into their early signature sound with it being driven by Fieldys click slap bass. "Tell Me What You Want", "Punishment Time" and "Mass Hysteria" are tracks that all stand out.

Nearly twenty years on from their vital self-titled debut korn have come a long way and are in a position where if they try something new they will be criticised for not sounding like the old Korn, the same can be said if they go back and try their old sound they will accused of being stale. In many ways "The Paradigm Shift" is a slow burner of an album that takes a while to reveal its layers which in many ways is similar to 2002's now much loved masterpiece "Untouchables". So take the time to give it more than one listen.

As a long time Korn fan since 1998, Jonathan Davis and the Gang bring back the heavy guitars in full force in the 2013 album, The Paradigm Shift, with powering, crushing riffs blended with @ss kicking vocal harmonies and roaring screams of the past, with just a sparse hint of synthetic sound of the future.
What's most impressive? Of the 13 songs (deluxe version), they all deliver on the above goal, resulting in one of the arguably best albums ever released by Korn.
1. Prey For Me 5/5
2. Love & Meth 5/5
3. What We Do 4/5
4. Spike In My Veins 5/5 +
5. Mass Hysteria 4/5
6. Paranoid And Aroused 4/5
7. Never Never 5/5
8. Punishment Time 4/5
9. Lullaby For A Sadist 4/5
10. Victimized 4/5
11. It's All Wrong 4/5
12. Wish I Wasn't Born Today (deluxe) 3/5
13. Tell Me What You Want (deluxe) 5/5 +
Overall? Awesome.

On my 3rd listen, and it's exactly what I wanted to hear from Korn, as though they read our reviews and said, "Let's ease up on all of the dub step synths, bring in more heavy guitars, bring back the anger and screams, while retaining the great melody." Mission accomplished.

Biggest surprise of the year. The Paradigm Shift delivers the heaviness many fans wanted in both vocals and guitars.

Deluxe Version: As with the previous Deluxe version of their last album, and a number of others, Korn saves some of their best tracks for the bonuses. Oftentimes, you can't get these tracks unless you buy the deluxe album, and if you're a diehard Korn fan, don't pass it up. The included DVD Documentary covers 1 hour of Korn's journey and creation of this killer album, including Welch's return and his reasoning, along with Korn being open minded and mature enough to bring back a former member.

Korn is like moonshine to me, a remedy when nothing else commercially available will suffice. Their eleventh album The Paradigm Shift ranks among their most potent and volatile concoctions yet. That's saying something when you consider the Grammy award-winning band is approaching twenty years in the industry. It's all because of the return of their beloved co-founding guitarist Brian "Head" Welch, whose unique method of creating a hybrid guitar presence with his band mate Munky has long ago passed the point of legend. Yet it also has a lot to do with the renewed vigor and friendly professional disposition of Ray Luzier, their drummer now since their ninth album Korn III: Remember Who You Are.

The results are a regained focus and passion fans have been craving for some time now, ten years in fact if you measure from the last album featuring Head, 2003's Take A Look In The Mirror. The first track, "Prey For Me", I must ask, how is it this lead-in track manages to leap out of the proverbial box recycling a few familiar old riffs before reaching for transcendence in the counterpoint chorus and final half? I don't know, but that's exactly what it manages to do, with the resounding finality they built their foundation upon. Fieldy's click bass is back in place and everyone just coheres together for an astounding opening track.

"Goodbye, so long, wish I could stay but everything is all wrong," sings Jonathan during a brief interlude which manages to nail the psycho-emotional tone of not merely the whole album, but the entire band's legacy itself. "Passion is sometimes a phukt up thing for me," Jon sings straight up, cutting through the usual sort of dressy lyrics most bands opt for. You know what you can all do with that sort of predictable poetry.
