The simulator is fun. Lot's of options regarding weather, time of day and such. The clouds look a little fake. The missions are enjoyable, most are easy, some are pretty hard, especially when you have to tug a huge ship into a harbor. I wish there were more view options. Also, I wish you could control the ship when using the "3" view as I like to put myself on the side where I am docking so I can see what I am doing. I know you can do it with the "1" view, but it's not as realistic if you watch from above, a captain doesn't have that luxury. The biggest issue in my opinion is the limited world you can discover. Rather than just giving you a very simplified rest of the world, you can only sail in the select few harbors and no further. The program just tells you that you have left the area and sends you back to the main menu. Some years ago I had a different ship simulator, and it had all of the world at least in a rudimentary style. The general physics seem pretty good, although sometimes when I reverse a regular ship with a normal rudder, it doesn't seem to react to the rudder in a manner I think it should. I'm just used to small boats, so it may be accurate that a super tanker does odd stuff when reversing, I wouldn't know, if there are any super tanker captains here, please let me know.
I run it on an older PC with Win 7 64 bit, a Q9400 quad core 2.66 GHz processor, 8GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce GT230 graphics card. All settings are maxed out and I never see any video lag.
I do hope the company keeps at it and tweaks the game a little more and maybe add some more scenery, that would be nice. I would love for example to have the Piraeus Harbor in Athens and the surrounding area.
All in all, if you love ships, and considering the price, this is a fun game, but I think it may get boring in a short amount of time.
Update:
I have played with this sim for a while now and have become slightly annoyed at two things. First, when free roaming, even though you can land yourself at many places in a harbor, there aren't very many places to actually dock. Sorry, I don't know the marine lingo, but what I mean is you can't attach ropes to the dock. Even some places where you could, it won't let you in free roam. Makes no sense, docking properly is the biggest challenge in this game with a big ship.
Another annoyance is that when you drift into the dock even at 0.3 knots, the dock sometimes launches the ship at high speed the opposite way. Very frustrating and highly unrealistic.
The other annoyance is the sound samples. Most sounds sample are way to short. The wind sound will drive you nuts after a minute, as it is the same loop over and over and not spliced very smooth. Engine sound is the same. Odd is also that if you are inside a large ship, you hear the wind as loud as you would on a sailboat. I doubt you hear much wind on a large ship bridge. Probably mostly the humming of the engines.
What's done well is the modeling of the vessels and their basic handling characteristics. It's quite a challenge manuevering a huge ocean going vessel through a narrow port. There are plenty of missions like this to challenge your ability to dock a ship without making a hash of it.
That element is fun, but it's also rather time consuming and while some missions have been truncated, you don't really sail across the Atlantic in a cargo vessel, you'll still need plenty of hours to get through the missions.
What's really missing is the graphical element that makes the simulator feel authentic. Compare it to say some of the more recent flight simulators, like the DCS franchise, or Rise of Flight and you begin to feel like you've gone back ten years in graphics design. Cranking up all the specs doesn't really deliver and while things are sharp enough on board, there's that real world environment that's lacking.
If you like this kind of sim' go for it, but if you're expecting extreme weather sailing a the taste of salt in your mouth, and the sound of waves slamming the ship...well, you'll be disappointed.
I have spent a fair amount of time on board vessels, and I can say that this simulation captures the experience quite well.
Unlike other reviewers, I found that it took no time whatsoever to jump into a boat, push the throttle forward, look around, etc. For me, at least, the controls work just fine.
No, it is not a "run 'n gun" game. The point is to travel on the ocean. Rather like the point of MS Flight Simulator is to fly around the sky. So those looking for more action may want to try the Silent Hunter games or PT Boats from Battlefront. But for those who would like to get out on the high seas, you can't do better than this.
all its functions. It works ok with a keyboard but a joystick gives
you more freedom and convenience.
The game lets you choose the type of ship you pilot (from small to
ultra-large) and what port you are entering or leaving. Allows you to
set the time of year, sea conditions, wind, and weather. The game can
also assign missions and you gain rewards for successful completion.
The realism of the surroundings, controls and sounds is amazing!
