Have you heard of an Omni-verse (parallel universe) that contains 12 different places? This story explores how these 12 different realms become a reality for a young girl named Luha Jane Quibadeux. Only 14 years of age, she dies tragically in a violent situation. As she dies, she meets another part of herself that is already in purgatory. The author, Christy Elkins, writing style helps the reader learn about the 12 different "parts" of an individual soul that learns about the different lifetimes on these different parallel universes. Each part of this soul has different names and experience different events in their lives that they learn from. Jealousy is felt through several of the souls that did not experience happiness in their lives. When these 12 different parts of the soul become one, in the end, acceptance and forgiveness are the lessons learned. Readers will enjoy taking this journey with the main character as she learns life lessons that continue through her death.
"WHAT IS YOUR STORY?"
As the story unfolds, it becomes impossible not to feel with the characters, not to wonder about their pasts and what will happen to them in the future. The storyline is original, interesting, and very well thought through, and Elkins makes you not just want, but need, to read one more page, one more chapter, just a little further, to see what will happen. I was completely captivated a few lines beyond the prologue, and didn't stop reading until I'd turned the last page.
"Parallel" is an excellent book, one of the best I've read for a long time, and with this book Elkins shows that she's more than an entertaining author; she's a great author. I've been trying to think of something to compare it to, but I can't, because in all the hundreds or maybe even thousands of books I've read, there's never been anything quite like it. The closest I can come is the series, "Incarnations of Immortality," by Piers Anthony. It is not on the same theme, not at all about the same thing, but but somehow gave me the same feeling of both wonder and amusement.
Now I have to admit, I am not a very religious person and thought with the 'disclaimer' at the beginning it would be overly spiritual but I have to tell you it was not and I was never uncomfortable with it. I really liked the story, it was a little bit over my head but even as someone who doesn't fully understand the 12 realms, it was a story that I enjoyed and don't feel as though you need to have knowledge on anything religious to enjoy this book.
I enjoyed your interactions with all the different Luha Jane facade's and found it realitively easy to follow along. There were a few areas where I was over my head and confused, but it never distacted me enough to put the book down!!
Overall, though this book wasn't incredibly long, Elkins covers a LOT and will keep you guessing and wanting to keep turning every page. Recommended read!
