I just started this series. I read the first two books in a day and a half. I couldn't put it down. Very well wrote. The pace is fast. I like how the author starts you on a journey quickly! The characters are intense and the paramedic action is just technical enough but not over the top so the reader gets lost in medical lingo! The only issue is, the books are too short!

The story in these books is okay, with passable characters and dialogue, but it is not a page burner. I have no problem putting it down; I have more of a problem resuming the story to get it finished. This book was also short at barely past 200 pages, but it seemed longer. It seemed longer because the story drags on at a snail's pace. Many scenes are filled with meaningless detail, like the ordering process every time they eat at a diner, or the layout and contents of many of the rooms that are entered. Setting the scene is worthwhile, however this just seems to have the goal of increasing the word count without furthering the plot nor increasing interest. Talking about restocking the ambulance after a run provided interesting background detail the first time; after that, it was just boring filler. These stories would improve greatly if there were more plot developments, or if the scene descriptions were more creatively described, or if the dialogue was witty and interesting, or if the characters had more depth, or if the action scenes had more action or were more intense through riveting descriptions, or ....

I enjoyed the first book and this makes a great second outing. That said, it can be obvious sometimes they Jamie is still a freshman writer here. Although the attention to detail is fascinating when describing the medical scenes, there are times he goes into too much detail in things that can be glossed over since they have no relevance to the story. The step-by-step description of everything happening in a morning breakfast scene is unnecessary, since nothing important actually is happening beyond conversation between the two title characters. But that can be forgiven since most of the book is so interesting and entertaining.

The medical parts were written realistically and the patients are unique. the Cause is doing its part causing the general fear among the Unusuals and trouble is brewing. Can't wait for the next book in this series. You don't want to miss it.

The plot deepens and grows further. Keep wondering days after reading this what will come up in the next book and the story will have you hooked. The sudden stop in the tale makes it seem a little like it was meant to be a longer book but he decided to move it on to the next one but a compelling series none the less with great characters that just grow on you more and more as you keep meeting them.
