Paramilitarism and Neoliberalism: Violent Systems of Capital Accumulation in Colombia and Beyond Hardcover – September 20, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
The activities of paramilitary groups in the postdemobilisation era, their involvement in human rights violations, and their multilevel support networks inside major state institutions are documented, with a particular emphasis on violent dispossession and illegal land appropriation that has benefited agroindustries and mining enterprises. Hristov engages in a Marxist political economy approach, combined with a global sociological perspective, allowing for an expansive and deep-reaching understanding of paramilitarism as a phenomenon with many faces, ultimately illustrating how it is increasingly becoming the coercive counterpart of global capital.

Review
"Jasmin Hristov exposes in this vitally important study the links between paramilitary force, state repression and plunder by local and transnational elites in Colombia and elsewhere. This is the first study to provide a theoretical understanding of paramilitary violence as an instrument of neo-liberal globalization. It shows how expanding poverty and inequalities are not inconvenient byproducts of development but the inevitable consequences of a social order based on the systematic and violent expropriation of peasants and the pillage of natural resources maintained through state-sponsored death squads and social cleansing. Hristov writes with great clarity, passion, and commitment. As she makes clear, we ignore the Colombian case at great peril. The work shows how the Colombian model of 'private' terror in the service of global capitalism is being exported to the rest of Latin America and the World. Colombia thus holds up a mirror to the face of a ruthless global capitalism in deep crisis and headed towards authoritarian and neo-fascist forms of transnational social control. Paramilitarism and Neoliberalism will be of great interest to scholars of Latin America, international affairs, political economy, and globalization. Beyond Colombia, and beyond the academy, this book is a wake-up call; a must read for anyone concerned with human rights and social justice in the world today." – William I. Robinson, Professor of Sociology, University of California at Santa Barbara, Author of Global Capitalism and the Crisis of Humanity
"This book is an urgent and elegant indictment of the paramilitary-capital-state nexus in contemporary Colombia. Each node in the network of violence at the root of capital accumulation is unveiled with precision and a mastery of the facts.' – Jeffery R. Webber, Queen Mary University of London, author of Red October: Left-Indigenous Struggles in Modern Bolivia

- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2016Jasmin Hristov has written a detailed and precise account of how the state of Columbia uses paramilitary violence and terror to increase and fortify the assets of the rich. In order to justify these ends (the prosperity of society), exaggerated claims of internal insurgency are reported; here is an excerpt from the introduction:
“Jointly, state and paramilitary violence has facilitated processes of capital accumulation by repressing social movements, eliminating political opponents, displacing populations, intimidating journalists and human rights activists, and engaging in social cleansing. Although, officially, paramilitary groups had demobilised by February 2006, in reality since then there has been an upsurge in paramilitary violence”.
This complementary symbiosis between the state and the paramilitary is described as circular in nature, growing outwardly as the lands of the dispossessed are usually absorbed by agribusiness and mining, and developing inwardly through the interpenetration of the state by paramilitary personnel assuming key positions within the state apparatus. At each turn of the cycle, capitalist assets are increased and protected at the expense of the working and dispossessed majority.
This is a chilling and complex narrative written with clarity and humanity. The Transnational Capitalist Class (TCC) and the implementation of its Transnational State (TNS) is well advanced. According to neoliberal ideology, those genocidal means are fully justified for societies continued enrichment; the enrichment of an ever shrinking sector. Jasmin’s book is a macabre, Orwellian warning we cannot afford to ignore.

Jonathan R. RoseReviewed in Canada on October 29, 20235.0 out of 5 stars A great source of understanding on the complex paramilitary violence in Colombia
This book was a fascinating exploration of the violence that has affected Colombia for decades, specifically from the paramilitary. While also providing background about the creation and motivations of the country's abundance of paramilitary groups, this book also sheds light on the argument that the paramilitary has not ceased committing acts of violence on behalf of the state and international corporations despite is public disarming, and continue to torment, displace, and rob people of their land in order to maximize profits for the powerful. For anybody interested in learning about the paramilitary groups that have terrorized Colombia, this book, written in a way that is very accessible, with plenty of journalistic integrity, is a great read.
