Of course, I loved the fact that Celia got her happy ending, in more ways than one, but felt the book could be a 5 star with more attention to little details.
Genre: Shifter romance
Celia Masters is the halfling (shifter/human) half-sister of the Whiskey Springs Pack Alpha. She can't shift, can't sense her animal. The only wolfy sense she has is hearing that is more acute than normal. Her best friend Rick and his family recently died in a fire at their restaurant and upstairs apartment, and she is understandably depressed. She also feels guilty because Rick had declared his love and she told him she didn't feel the same, so he was home the night of the fire rather than out with her.
Logan Nilsson is an independent fire investigator sent by the insurance company to look into the cause of the fire. The local fire marshal had declared it an accidental grease fire, but Logan has the expertise, experience, and most importantly time to examine all the clues.
Celia sees Logan in the burnt out ruins and confronts him in a rather hostile manner. But as far as he is concerned, it's love at first sight. A few days later he asks her out, and she tentatively accepts. So he's in love, but she's afraid of love. Then she starts hearing her wolf who declares Logan is Celia's mate. The book is about what caused the fire, investigation into other fires, and the growing relationship between Logan and Celia.
This is a well-written book, with fine grammar and usage, though there are some dropped words in the text. The characters, including secondaries, are well-drawn, though I will admit to not liking Celia very much. She comes across as abrasive rather than strong. Descriptive language is somewhat wanting. The H/h are pretty well described, but the town and places in it not so much. Perhaps because this is the second in a series and the settings were established in the first it is assumed the reader is already familiar. The book has a few rather graphic love scenes, but they do not detract from the plot. They are also incidental to the plot, rather than a lot a sex loosely tied together with a mediocre plot.
I highly recommend this to readers who enjoy a good shifter story that contains sexy times.
Celia's wolf recognizes Logan as her mate and Logan is mightily attracted to Celia. But Celia is going to fight the attraction with all her being. Until she can't. Things worsen as the arsonist spirals out of control but worse than that is an effort by someone to kill the Alpha and take over. This jeopardizes Celia and others as things come to a head. And when it does, Celia's wolf takes action and she saves Logan's life as well. Celia simply can't lose the love of her life.
