Editorial Reviews

The film is based on an original story by Chris Butler (Corpse Bride), who also directed the film alongside
Sam Fell (Flushed Away, The Tale of Despereaux), and follows a young boy by the name of Norman
Babcock who can see dead people. That, however, is the least of his problems... In ParaNorman, a small
town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by
Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he ll have to take on
ghosts, witches and, worst of all, moronic grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But
this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits. The
movie features the voices of Casey Affleck (The Killer Inside Me), Tempestt Bledsoe ( The Cosby Show ),
Jeff Garlin (Toy Story 3), John Goodman (Red State, Matinee, Monsters, Inc.), Bernard Hill (Titanic),
Academy Award® nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Leslie Mann (Rio), Christopher Mintz-Plasse
(Fright Night 3D, How to Train Your Dragon), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) and Tony® and Emmy Award®
winner Elaine Stritch ( 30 Rock ). The composition of the film is from acclaimed composer, producer, and
musician Jon Brion. Jon s work has been the anchor to such films as Magnolia and Eternal Sunshine of
the Spotless Mind of which he was nominated for a Grammy® Award on both. Brion also contributed
to the celebrated films Boogie Nights, and I Heart Huckabees as well as The Break-Up, Step Brothers and
Punch Drunk Love. As an artist and producer Brion has worked with some of music s most significant
artists including: Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, The Crystal Method, Rufus Wainwright, Robin Hitchcock, Elliot
Smith, Kanye West, Spoon, Dido, Keane, Of Montreal, Katy Parry, Punch Brothers, Best Coast and was a
member of the alternative pop band, The Jellyfish. Also Brion was a founding member of The Greys and
played and toured with Til Tuesday, Aimee Mann, The Wallflowers and Sam Phillips.

I personally only actually bought this album for the music in the scene where Norman confronts Aggie (a beautiful and intense piece) and I was somewhat vexed at its absence from the album. I checked iTunes for the tracklisting to see if there had been bonus tracks released at some point and on the "search" page, the iTunes album has tracks numbering up through 19, although there's still only a total of 16 on the one they offer. It kind of implies that several were removed for some reason, which is extremely disappointing. But in all fairness, it's still a great soundtrack. This is the first of Jon Brion's work I've ever owned and regardless of the initial let-down, I've become very fond of the album.
I can't honestly compare it to the rest of the composer's music, but I thought I'd share what I learned about the missing tracks in the reviews here.

I'm partial to Jon Brion's work both in cinema and as a songwriter. This score worked very well in the film, but it's not quite as nice a listen as was Punch-Drunk Love or I Heart Huckabees. And it's really unfortunate that they didn't have him do at least one vocal track. That said, there are some wonderful Jon Brion moments here, especially on "Norman's Walk." The theme is so memorable that my 6 1/2 year-old was still humming it to himself the next day after seeing the movie. The 80's Zombie Theme is really good fun, too. It's nice to hear Jon Brion's music back in an "arty" context after having his music overshadowed in a couple of Will Farrell films.

I came here for the sole purpose of buying the score from the climax of the movie, only to find it's not in here! Track 14 - Aggie Fights does a bait and switch, leaving out the theatrical score for something apocryphal. I can't be the only one who was drawn to this single track, only to be let down, and seeing the other reviews, it sounds like there's even more missing.
Such a shame!

I'm a soundtrack junkie, and the Paranorman soundtrack is really, really fun and great to listen to. It's fairly mellow, which makes it very effective ambiance music, but there are points in which it really brings out a sense of awe and adventure that can be pretty inspiring, especially for artists.

That said, the movie's crowning song is not in this soundtrack at all. During the climax, in which Norman steps up to the plate to face his greatest challenge, a song plays which sends chills down my spine. It's constant dramatic build up of epic proportions. Why this great piece of music was not included in this soundtrack, I have no idea.

While I really like the soundtrack for this film, this album is incomplete and I refuse to rate it for the time being. I can only hope that there is another release at some point that actually includes the complete score.

I really found this soundtrack to be beautiful. I've been listening to it while I work, and it's quite fantastic.

Some of the pieces are slower, but if you can appreciate the slower pieces as well as the faster ones, it's a very enjoyable soundtrack.

My favorite tracks are "Zombie Attacks in the Eighties," "Norman's Walk," and "Oh, and one more thing."

If you really enjoyed the movie and the music in the movie, I highly recommend this product.

I love this soundtrack; i was inspired to buy the soundtrack when I looked at 'the making of' website; the music playing on the website is a mix of the soundtrack. It is lovely.
