Packaging: Came very well protected, was double boxed with packing paper in between each box and foam around the actual monitor. At first glance you can see they saved quite a bit in advertising the package and they price reflects that. So for those looking for a flashy box with cool pictures, you aren't getting that. Instead you are getting a plain old brown box that more than does the job to make sure you get your Coast22 in perfect shape.
What's inside: 21.5 Parblo Coast22 tablet, battery free/no recharge needed pen with eraser top, pen base with extra nibs and nib remover tool, two static free white gloves for when you clean the screen, cleaning cloth, two fingered drawing glove, Apple adapter cable, hdmi cable, vga cable, power supply and cable, usb cable, screen protector, screen brush, monitor cover and driver install disc.
*Only thing NOT included are instructions, not sure if my box simply did not come with them or they just don't offer them.
Initial set-up: This was straight forward, not sure about some of the reviews saying it took hours to set up. I simply located all the wires I would be needing to power up and connect to my PC. I read in some review that the driver disc *which by the way is a simple white disc with no label had only the 32bit system driver. I run Windows 10 64bit so I just went to the Parblo site and downloaded the correct driver directly. Not an issue, most moniters/tablets you have to do this anyway to ensure you get the most up to date driver.
Once I connected everything up to the PC I ran the driver which is very basic and easy to understand, waited till I was prompted to attach the monitor to the PC which I had already done so before, pressed enter and let the driver install and that was it. Restarted the PC so the changes took affect. * you are supposed to see a small icon letting you know the monitor is installed in your taskbar. I didn't get the icon in my task bar, but the monitor is installed. Could just have something to do with Windows 10.
Calibrating and initial test run: Once I restarted the PC I opened up the monitor file which looks very generic in my Windows 10, located the install location and opened the tablet settings. The settings are very basic, nothing like what you will find in the much more expensive Wacom models.
You have Pen settings, which let you assign one of the two keys on the pen. * There are two keys on the pen but only one is programmable. Adjust the nib pressure sensitivity and nib click. Also you can test the pen pressure as well.
You also have mapping which will let you select the screen *if you have multiple screens set up like myself, the area in which the pen is recognized and also this is where you will find the calibration tool. Very basic calibration, consists of tapping the pen in each corner of the monitor and you are done. Pretty bare bones settings but they are more than enough to get going. Overall...this process took about 5-10 minutes at most. Read some reviews where they stated this part taking hours?? If this is your first time using and setting up a monitor tablet....I still don't see this process taking hours. After calibrating everything seemed to work but I will get into that in detail later.
First impression using in Photoshop: The first thing I noticed and knew before hand was there were reviews that said they experienced a slight delay when they would put down lines fast. So that was the first thing I tried to duplicate, I did see the slight delays when I put down lines fast *picture fast painting strokes. I knew I would have to figure out how to fix this without using the limited settings the driver software provided, so I adjusted my settings in Photoshop. I maxed out all my performance settings and this did help to get rid of the most of the slight delay. I do see it still but only when I really put down lines extremely fast and have been working in Photoshop for a long time.
I am only running 4gb of ram memory, so this could be the reason I am still seeing the slight delay *very limited at this point, so I will be upgrading to 8gb of ram memory as this is the max my motherboard will allow. I am pretty confident that once I upgrade to 8gb of memory the delay will be one completely.
*So the delay issue will vary greatly depending on your system set up/memory.
Pen Feel and responce: The overall feel of the pen in your hand feels good, I have used Wacom's and Huion pen monitors in the past so this is not new to me. The pen might take a bit to get used to if this is your first time using it. The keys on the pen feel tight and won't easily click on accident, my Huion pen had that issue so I had to simply disabled them so I wouldn't click on them on accident. The pen is not round like most which I thought would feel awkward at first but it actually helped the grip and identify where the buttons/keys were. This is also a battery-less/no charging needed pen so you don't have to worry about your pen running out of power in the middle of a project which you don't find too much in Non Wacom monitors/tablets *the technology seems to be catching up to Wacom and I have seen a few more models/brands adopting this technology which is great. The nib on the pen is solid and you don't hear it running over the glass surface or hear any clicking sound from the nib * I didn't install the screen protector on my monitor so I don't know if this would affect the way the pen feels or glides over it. The eraser on the top of the pen however is another story. I have yet to get it to work properly in Photoshop, I use Photoshop CS5. I contacted Parblo via email, it took a while to get a reply but they suggested I upgrade to the latest Photoshop edition. I have not tried it, and simply won't bother with the eraser as I use a Razer Tartarus that has all my shortcuts including an eraser key. So the eraser was simply a plus, and I find that the extra seconds it takes to flip the pen in your hand slows you down and being productive is way more important to me than having an eraser on top of the pen. *The eraser not working for me could just be a software issue with Photoshop, I am able to use the eraser without issues in the test box within the tablet settings, so it does work just not completely with my version of Photoshop.
The overall pen to line is pretty dead on and I never experienced any jittery points...my lines were perfectly underneath my pen. Compared to a Wacom this is as close to it as I have experienced.
The pen glides nicely on the glass surface, and with the drawing glove your hand slides perfectly. The only negative would be that it is a smooth glass surface unlike the textured surface that helps to duplicate the feel of a paper surface that the Wacom models come with. So it does take some practice to get used to the surface and put down straight lines. It also has 45 degree tilt recognition.
Monitor: Like I said above the monitor comes with a smooth glass screen, the color is very sharp and took a little bit of adjustment to match the rest of my monitors as far as colors go. Viewing angle is perfect for me any way I adjusted the stand. The stand fills very solid and I am not afraid to put any weight on the monitor. It has a on and off button on the right backside of the monitor, so if you are not using it you can simply turn it off to save the life of the screen or simply use it as you would any other monitor. The over all build of the monitor is solid, never did it feel cheap when handling it. There are no dedicated keys/buttons on the monitor so you will have to use a keyboard or keypad. The screen is 21.5 inches so not exactly 22 as the model number would imply but it is more than big enough for most anybody or project.
Battery free pen/Non charging
All the free stuff that comes with it /Gloves/Cleaning kit/Screen protector/Cover
Did I mention the Price
Con: Eraser does not work for me
No dedicated buttons/keys on monitor
Overall I would highly recommend this Monitor over the Higher priced Wacom's unless you are dead set on getting a Wacom or simply on a budget.
The cons are really just me nit picking just so that there was something to put in that Cons category but they do not take away from the overall experience.
I give this a solid 4.5 out of 5 star only because of the few issues it does have, NOT quite a Wacom Cintiq but for everything it comes with and the price you can't beat it.
Hope this helps for those still up in the air about this model.
*If I have time or remember to try a few things to get the eraser to work I will update my review.
ALSO, when I contacted Parblo I asked about any warranty and they said it had a 1 year warranty on the monitor.
If there is anything I may have left out or I may not have covered, please don't be afraid to ask.
12/23/16 Update: I have now had this tablet for a little over 2 months now. I am beyond happy with this tablet. Have had 0 issues with it outside of the eraser not working with my Photoshop...But I am 100% sure it has something to do with my PC set up and not the tablet. Mute point for me since I never use the top eraser anyways.
I did end up putting on the supplied screen protector and it was a pain to install correctly.....it didn't add anything to the overall feel of the glass surface. Which I did not enjoy as much as the Cintiq models which have a textured surface which makes them feel like you are drawing on paper.
I did some research and found this protector.
It is the same used on the Cintiq models. I went ahead and ordered it....it is just big enough to cover the actual drawing area on the screen, gives you some coverage over just slightly. NOW I have that textured feel to the glass surface just like a Cintiq, it has made drawing on my tablet a lot easier and enjoyable.
Use lots of windex/display cleaning solution when applying the protector.....I mean bath it with the stuff, put a towel underneath the tablet as you apply the windex/lcd cleaner to the screen. take a credit card and simply push out the solution along with the air bubbles. super easy this way.
*Note you have to put the USB that comes with it to your computer so it will find the tablet your using since VGA and HDMI is for image screen.*
I am only giving it a 4 star due to having problems with the tablet settings on testing pressure drawing right now. But I will change it if it gets fix and the calibration as I couldn't click it to work.
Update fix: Turns out it when I used the disk install it gave me a 32-bit tablet setting on my computer.
-If anyone is having this problem with the disk installing a 32-bit tablet setting go to Parblo official site and go to the upper tab that says Support to download their version with 64-bit included.
