But what if the relationship is the key unlocking my child's innate desire to succeed and thrive, and yes, to even hand in his homework? For the first time I started asking questions rather than focusing on answers and ironically the questions let me to more clarity and answers than I've ever had. I discovered how much my own expectations and judgement were contributing to the problem. After I began implementing what I'll just call "the curious approach". Almost immediately I got the sense that my son felt we were teammates striving for the same goals. My new perspective and acceptance stripped away his defensiveness and defiance. He no longer needs to prove that he can do whatever he wants or show that he doesn't care about something as a way to save face. The change first in myself, and then in him is what is getting us to the more tangible "results" I was looking for. The book begins with this general shift and also gives specific, practical "NOW" strategies to use with this new perspective. Reading it was the beginning of an amazing journey for us as a family. I am so thankful I found it. You will be too.
