Parenting Children With ADHD: 10 Lessons That Medicine Cannot Teach (APA LifeTools Series) Kindle Edition
Children with ADHD struggle so much with inattention or hyperactivity and impulsivity that they have trouble succeeding at home, at school, with friends, or on the playing field. Parenting Children With ADHD, now in its second edition, shows how you can become your child’s best advocate, helping to improve attention, behavioral control, and social skills.
Engaging and straightforward, the book is directed at caregivers of children who have, or might have, ADHD. Dr. Monastra discusses all the relevant issues for parents, including psychological treatment, diet, educational laws, and practical coping strategies for both parents and children. It shows how to obtain a comprehensive evaluation, how to get help from school systems, and how to use medication and parenting techniques to significantly reduce ADHD symptoms.
Updates in this edition include:
- new procedures and tests for diagnosing ADHD;
- empirically-supported psychological treatments for ADHD, including neurotherapy;
- tips for developing a safe, supportive educational environment for your child;
- a new chapter on teaching life values such as kindness, generosity and compassion; and
- caregiver-friendly lessons that are helpfully sequenced to be covered “one at a time,” beginning with the causes of ADHD and the most common medical treatments.

Dr. Monastra's research examining the neurophysiological characteristics of children and teens with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as his treatment studies investigating the role of parenting style, school intervention, nutrition, and electroencephalographic (EEG) biofeedback in the overall care of patients with ADHD, is internationally recognized and has led to several scientific awards, including the President's Award and the Hans Berger Award, bestowed by the Association for Applied Psychophysiology & Biofeedback for his groundbreaking research. He is listed among the innovative researchers recognized in Reader's Digest's 2004 edition of Medical Breakthroughs.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2015Was this man living in my house? Holy smokes! I had to call my son in and read him a few chapters and apologize profusely! Apologize because I was the mom that did not completely understand some of these behaviors, myself. I thought some of these things he had the power to control. Not so. This book showed me that I needed to work on some ways of dealing with these behaviors and teaching him how to navigate through them.
This book offered so much insight and so much in understanding this disorder! I was amazed!
I can say that I have referred to this several times...
I would like to give a copy of this book to the teachers he has, the teachers that he has had and the teachers he will have, as well as family members and friends that have believed that a good spanking was all he has ever needed. There are times, I'm sure, when a swat on the butt was in order, however, a lot of this was beyond OUR control.
Thank you a million times over for shedding light on this subject.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2016BEST ADHD BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!! I highly recommend this book. This book is the best thing that has happened to me as a parent. I took my daughter to weekly therapy sessions for over a year and this book basically addressed all the issues that the therapist couldn't even pinpoint or help with. As a parent, I felt I needed to educate myself better so I could help my daughter, and this is the best tool I've found. It will give you so many options and lead you in the right direction even if you don't want to follow it exactly.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2019This book has been a godsend and Dr. Monastra writes in a very easy to understand, yet specific way. I was so impressed that I scheduled an appointment for my son to meet with Dr. Monastra and get evaluated (we live in FL and flew to see
Dr. Monastra in NY). Invaluable information - I am now on track to getting my child the help he needs in school. I have followed Dr. Monastra's advice on diet and we are definitely seeing very positive results.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2022If you have a kiddo with ADHD this is a fantastic resource for you! Wealth of information that can help you to understand and navigate the process of helping your child succeed.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2014It has been hard finding books that are without a skew or viewpoint and help sort out real issues. This is a must read for what to do WITH a child on medicine because the medicine is not a CURE and you need to understand how to set things up for success. This recently published book has very specific information on why one medication might work over another, what the effects of eating protiens at different times of the day are and more. These help you make decisions that can be implemented with children for concrete results on a day by day basis.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2016Life changing book!! Very well written and actually has applicable, every day, real life scenarios and tells a floundering parent what to say and do in the heat of the moment. Gentle consistent discipline with the extra stuff kids with ADHD need thrown in the mix. Great catch thoughts/phrases, paradigm shifters. I'm so glad I bought this book!
