Mac Bledsoe teaches parents how to instill a sense of responsible decision making in their kids.

I recommend this book to ALL Parents!
They're so accessible; not research-laden like Alfie Kohn's Unconditional Parenting book (although much of their philosophies overlap!) Bledsoe's advice and philosophies simply RING true as time-tested from his wide swath of experience with children: as an educator, a father, grandfather, and someone who has worked with kids in juve.
Mr. Bledsoe references back to his 5 rules all throughout the book, but they are more like pilars of a foundation for raising a WHOLE human being. He goes way beyond simple tactics to gain 'compliance' employed by authors like Supernanny, and the like, to much more broad guidance about human behavior of WHY kids do what they do! It just makes good sense, and works!
THAT SAID, he warns you from the first chapters, there are NO quick-fixes. Teaching kids proper behaviors, self-regulation, and good decision-making skills (aka raising adults) takes TIME! And changing established unproductive behaviors (the parents or child's) takes time, and endless patience. But he's also considerate enough to mentionin the early years book that if both parents work, maybe you can be even more careful about who your child-care provider really is and what they're teaching your child when you're not around. Which fits also within his guidance of having a very pro-active instead of a "reactive" crisis management type parenting picture.
There may be no shortcuts; however, he offers such great observations that it makes the marathon of parenting easier to accept because you feel there's now a PLAN!
It's a funny book, heartwarming, and motivational, with real-world advice as the author learned it the hard way from years in the classroom.
This is a great book for teachers and caretakers and we are giving it to a relative who teaches 6th graders.
Of all the books in my collection this is the only one I've bothered writing a review for because it actually works. And I'm not exhausting myself trying to keep up with/enforce the rules. I have to think hard sometimes on how to apply the principles to my diffucult 6year old daughter, but when I make the connection it works every time.
We have implemented Mac's 'Parenting with Dignity' curriculum into our education program at our church. This has not only served to better equip parents on how to raise responsible, independent children but has been a wonderful outreach tool to the unchurched community. The 5-point plan explained in this book can easily be incorporated into biblical principles which we teach simultaneously. If we can help you incorporate this parenting plan into your church, feel free to email us email@example.comParenting with Dignity: The Early Years
