Just wanted to update. 2014: I first reviewed this book when things were really difficult, and after a lot of work, things are good. Just a reminder that diagnoses are not life sentences as long as you realize you are the only one with your key. Other people might be able to support you, but the process is all yours, baby! That's a lot of responsibility, but it's also SO MUCH freedom. As to parenting, one of the best things I found: I got a LOT out of Slow Parenting though it did not directly focus on mental health issues. Slow Parenting Teens: How to Create a Positive, Respectful, and Fun Relationship with Your Teenager This was helpful long before we got to the teen years and was a great help to building a resilient relationship between parent and child that helped weather the tough times for all concerned.
The book has shown me a way to better manage my illness. Most of the chapters deal with subjects such as how to put together a self-care plan,a crisis plan (such as going into the hospital),how to make better use of finances as well as the importance of keeping a balanced life.
I believe very strongly that not only parents with a mental illness but parents without a mental illness and childless couples with or without an illness can also benefit from reading this book.
This is a must read book for anyone who wants to improve any area of their life.
