Charles Baudelaire said the flâneur is a "spectator, a prince who everywhere rejoices in his incognito. The lover of life makes the whole world his family."
Plantenga draws from this same peripatetic inspiration. "Paris Scratch" is a sweet n' sizzling ode to Paris that takes mind and soul on an unforgettable stroll. When I've read the last passage, I'm putting it on my shelf next to my favorite tomes by Henri Michaux, Baudelaire, Orwell (Down and Out in Paris and London), and all of the other amblers/loiterers princes and poets who have tramped the same boulevards and left us their mental snapshots.
