The Conte a Paris Sketching crayons include various highly reputed Sanguine colors, Grey and Bistre, 3 grades of white and black complete the range. These crayons are very soft to apply and manufactured using natural pigments (iron oxides, carbon black, titanium dioxide), clay (kaolin) and a binder (cellulose ether). I’ve been using Conté off and on for 20 years now, and while some people complain about how the “formula has changed” I can say that the old sticks I still have in my college art case are the same, or at least similar enough in quality to the ones I received today.

I ordered 5 sets total. One basic set, 2 portrait sets, and 2 landscape sets. All were purchased from, and delivered by Amazon. One case was cracked a bit from being squeezed a bit, but *not a single stick was broken* in all 5 cases. Every one of the 36 sticks was unbroken. Please understand that while you are occasionally going to get a broken stick or two, exceptions like those pictured here may not be common. If it’s that bad, Amazon will replace them, but for the most part they are packed well enough to ship. I’m happy with my purchase, and hope that others have the same experience.

The classic 3 and four color drawing assortment used by artists for two hundred years, and the replacement for the three colored chalks used by Baroque artistis like Watteau and Rubens. Works well and has a consistency similar to thin compressed charcoal sticks with which it also works well. The Sanguine and Bistre colors allow for a shading feel different than black but compatable with the black. White conte works well on colored paper to highlight areas.
Covers all mark strengths and controllable in the hand. It shades well and smears nicely with finger or tortillion.
