Swank, author of the Rose Gardener Mystery series for adults, explores the complicated family dynamics that result from divorce. Sixteen-year-old Sophie, an aspiring pianist, and her 17-year-old brother, Eric, are a long way from forgiving their father for abandoning them to work in Paris, as well as recently remarrying. To make amends, he invites the siblings to spend the summer with him, wife Eva, and Camille, Eva's daughter, who is just as angry as Sophie and Eric are about her new family. Even the beauty of Paris isn't enough to smooth over Sophie's deep feelings of hurt toward her father, while Camille's antagonism robs Sophie of enjoying the sights and making potential new friends. Writing from Sophie's point of view, Swank handles the teen's powerful and sometimes conflicting feelings with insight and sensitivity. When tensions ease, Sophie is eventually able to open up to Paris, her father, and Mathieu, a handsome boy who invites her to practice piano at his family's apartment, in this family drama about forgiveness and starting fresh. About the Author
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became a nomadic gypsy, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period. Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in own her mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.) Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to perform many unspeakable tasks. She has six children and hasn't lost her sanity. Or so she leads you to believe.

(A Young Adult Novel)
"A wonderful young adult novel that is fitting for all ages 15 and older." -- A.Klick
I truly enjoyed this change of pace novel from Denise Grover Swank. I have read almost all of her books, and "One Paris Summer" is another literary hit for this author.
Ms Swank writes an honest depiction of two teens who travel to Paris for their father's wedding. Something they are not happy about. Nor are they happy that they have to spend their whole summer in Paris with their father, his new wife, and a new step-sister. The new wife they come to care about a great deal. The new sister...not so much.
There are times of confusion and insecurity. There are times of kinship, hope and companionship.
The characters are true and honest in their portrayal in their thoughts, feelings and behavior and make the novel come alive. They are tough but vulnerable. Flawed but likable and charming. They blossom and grow in many different ways over that summer.
They try to become a family unit but there is too much baggage and too many issues getting in the way. It is something that will take a lot more time for it to begin to slowly work.
There is honesty and anger from the teens toward their father. There is honesty from the teens to their step-mother in regard to many issues, but mainly her daughter (who is struggling with her own issues negatively).
At times funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming yet always a moving and meaningful portrayal of the summer in Paris for all the individuals.
A try treasure of a novel. Written with grace and love as the backdrop. "One Paris Summer" is a delightfully enjoyable read, that adults will will love and enjoy just as much as any young adult.
I highly recommend this novel. One not to be missed.
I enjoyed this book a lot and I really want to go to Paris even more now. Even though I have never been, I thought that the descriptions of Paris and the area were so well done that I felt like I was there. I also felt like Denise did a great job writing from a teenager's point of view. She got the drama and such down really well, and I'm sure having teenagers helped with that part. ;)
I read this in one day because I was so engrossed in the story. I wanted to keep reading so I could find out what was going to happen. Like I said previously, you aren't always sure you are going to get a HEA with Denise so you've just got to keep reading until you find out! I highly recommend this story for anyone who was a teenager once and had that one love that was worth everything.
Camille resents giving up her room for Eric and having to share a room with Sophie. She goes out of her way to let everyone know she is not happy with the current situation. Camille has been tasked with showing her new siblings around Paris this summer. Along with her friends, Camille makes Sophie's life a miserable experience. Then along comes this hunky Parisian boy who seems to have little interest but he fascinates Sophie.
The only respite Sophie has is her music. She is a very talented pianist and her dad had promised her mom that he would make sure she had access to a piano to practice over the summer. This doesn't exactly work out and in steps that handsome boy. His mom teaches music, she has a piano Sophie can use for her practice.
The story goes on to show a sweet romance, more angst and turmoil caused by Camille until Sophie heads home to figure out what her future holds. Will she make good choices? Will her handsome Parisian have a part in that future, and what about Sophie's musical future?
