I really liked this tool at first. Seemed to have everything I'd need for quick trailside repairs in a nice compact package. All was well for about one month, until I used the chain tool. First time I used the chain tool it broke. The metal for the "teeth" seemed too soft and simply broke off, making the chain tool useless. Fortunately this happened in my garage, not on some trail miles from nowhere.

Things like this really piss me off. Its essentaily a tool for emergency use, but what good is it if it isn't reliable? I'll probably still keep this with me for a while, just bring along a seperate chain tool, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

My back wheel slipped causing the tire to rub against the frame. To fix the problem I used the spanner provided with the Park Tool MTB-3. As soon as I applied pressure/torque, the tool cracked -- making it unusable.

I read reviews about similar issues that were resolved through the product's warranty. However, Park Tool's customer service clarified that the Park Tool MTB-3 "rescue" tool is not to be used in this manner and that I can *buy* a replacement part. Here's their email:

Good Afternoon Banning,
Thank you for using our products and your inquiry.
Sorry the spanner on the Casting of your MTB-3 has broken.
As a `rescue' tool, they are thin and lightweight, easier to carry, strong enough to snug up a loose component to rescue a ride...but not to loosen spec'ed components.
Replacement #965A casting for the MTB-3 is $10.95 + shipping.
Please call the number below with your CC to order.
Thanks again,
Marc

In other words: if you have a flat tire and feel that it's appropriate to remove a wheel -- think again. This isn't the tool for you.

Upon receiving the MTB-3 I used it to replace the pedals on my MTB using the pedal wrench that is built into the chain tool. With very minimal torque, the wrench kept slipping off, like the wrench was too big. Closer examination showed a crack in the tool that was almost invisible until you applied torque. I notified the store I purchased it from and they agreed to send a replacement. While waiting for the replacement to arrive, I used one of the hex keys to remove my disc brake calipers and the end of the shaft that holds all the tool in popped off. I am hopeful that I got a lemon and this will not happen with the replacement.

This multitool is worse than useless. The metal that the hex wrenches are made of consists of some kind of soft outer metal with a harder core. This means that for bolts that are tight and require any force to remove, the metal on the tool will strip, followed by the bolt itself stripping as the harder metal does not create a good interface with the bolt head. I even got a warranty replacement and that also had the same critical failing. This of course happens at the most inopportune times; this tool has led me to strip multiple bolts when on the trailside, leaving me stuck having to walk back to the train station. Hardly a rescue tool. Avoid!

It's got just about all you'll need for roadside and many at-home repairs.
Only gets 4 stars from me, because the straight edge screwdriver and the 3mm allen key are on the same
side of the tool (it splits in two) as the wrenches, and my bike (is a recumbent,
so it's a bit odd) has a few bolts that need both the wrench and the 3mm allen key to undo,
so I've got to carry an extra wrench in addition to the this tool.

4,5,6,8mm allen wrenches, T25 driver, phillips screwdriver, 1 tire tool on one half,
all the rest on the other half, plus the chain tool. No you can't remove the individual tools
(other than the chain tool) from the base.

I own or have owned over the years a few mini-tools. Some are no longer with us, but the MTB-3 I bought a decade ago is still in my CamelBak. I'm going to buy another for the seat bag of an old bike I normally don't ride with a CamelBak, just so I can ride around knowing it is there.

Yeah, this is no substitute for a nice tool box full of Park tools, but you can't very well haul that around with you, eh?

I give it two greasy thumbs up.

It must be kept in mind that this is a “rescue tool.” It is not intended for continuous or heavy duty in-shop repairs. If you should find yourself on a trail-side or the road and away from your home or local bike shop this tool may help you out of a jam. It is fine to tighten a loose screw, make a quick brake adjustment or chain repair. In fact, I have used it to break a chain once to repair. It is not good as a pedal wrench where high torque is required to remove most pedals.

If you plan to change pedals, or do other heavier repairs, it would be best to purchase the specific use tools from Park or other manufacturers.

The main drawback to this tool is the weight and size. It’s difficult to fit in some smaller “wedge” type seat packs.
