Because of the extra effort I put into this pen, can't help but enjoy writing almost everyday with it. I would love to give it five stars now, but because of the hassle to getting it to write properly, I can't say that I would recommend it with the way it's sold. But, if you are willing to fork out more money to buy a descent bottled ink and the DARN EXPENSIVE PROPRIETARY CARTRIDGE CONVERTER, then this will surely give you at least a great writing experience.
PLEASE ADJUST AT YOUR OWN RISK if you do plan on fixing the nib if there are any problems from the start.
Some things I've tried:
Rinsing the nib in cold water, drying throughly, then refilling with ink
Examined the places where the ink will flow and making sure they're free from clogs and debris
Still doesn't work.
This pen has been an absolute delight. It can lie unused for a week or two, but the moment I pull off the cap to write, the ink flows immediately. I like to use different ink colors, so I purchased the deluxe converter (the one supplied worked okay, but I preferred the screw-top to the push/pull lever). I also like to use a craft syringe to refill an emptied cartridge. Blue, black, or blue-black ink, this pen has been a modestly smooth writer, and I've thoroughly enjoyed using it. I think I've chosen to use Parker Qwink Blue-Black as my preferred ink color, but both Parker's black and blue inks are good color saturation through this pen.
I can recommend it without hesitation. One caveat, if it's important: the cartridges and converters are proprietary, that is, need to be Parker brand to work with Parker fountain pens. I only wish I could afford one of their Duofold models, but since I cannot, I will be happily contented with this model. I like that where I hold the pen it's a little "thicker" because I need a "fatter" pen. This model fills that need. Solid pen, dependable and consistent.

It is a medium sized pen, with a heavy all-metal construction (except for the nib holder). This gives it nice weight and balance, allowing good control. The snap cap fits the pen positively and will post on the pen and it may improve balance, giving less pressure on the nib. However, this results in a little less 'precision'. Posting the cap requires some pressure to sit firmly with a satisfying click. The good weight of the pen means that it doesn't waggle around like all-plastic pens often do. The matt finish and chrome/steel fittings give a traditional appearance bordering on unexciting. Overall, it is a fairly comfortable pen to use if you like small to medium sized ones. My personal preference is for a larger diameter pen than this for long essays (I have 'normal' size hands).
The small fine/medium nib is steel and has virtually no flex, giving a solid, even, but largely characterless stroke much like a fibre-tip or gel pen. It writes well with no pressure at all on the nib; pressing it just puts more ink down. Ink flow is on the wet side (good) with no skipping or hard/dry starts even after a week of no use. It is quite smooth - not the smoothest - and there is some 'feedback' while writing on normal paper. Smoothness improves with use. It is supplied with a cartridge: Parker converters fit tightly.
The Urban doesn't carry any markings to indicate where it is made, so my inference is that it is sourced from China (it has some resemblance to a Parker IM which is definitely made in China) . That is not a negative point in any way: many Chinese pens perform exceptionally well. It is better made than, say, most Jinhao pens (which are nevertheless very good).
Summary: a good pen for the price and excellent value if it can be bought discounted. Recommended. Take the negative review from people who don't bother to leanr how to use and maintain a fountain pen - they would complain that wooden pencils don't stay sharp!
The superior (cf 'Cross') writing experience improves with the quality of the paper used, but this is a minor point for me as I had excellent results on both a 'pukka jotta pad' and my journal.
The flow of ink through the fine nib is managed signicantly better than my outgoing 'Cross' fountain pen - the colour of the ink can now be better appreciated and the ink lasts longer, compartively. The fine nib provides a sharp, clean yet vivid writing experience with the stainless steel nib underpinning a smooth, free-flowing writing style. I clean my own regularly before refilling the cartridge, as such I rarely have a patchy ink flow experience. When I haven't used the open for several days I do have to press slightly (and I do mean slightly) harder to invigorate the ink flow, but once it starts flowing I haven't experienced any problems.
In an age where we are remembering how to better protect our planet, a fountain pen makes sense.
When I purchased the pen it was available at a modest discount, which gives an acceptable cost/performance ratio - for me. I use it with a dedicated, twist action, refillable cartridge and Parker's blue/black ink.
I have updated this review (Dec 2020) after using the pen frequently over the past year. So far it's still proving to be a lovely experience and, when writing, I genuinely get a little thrillas I use my Parker Urban fountain pen.
Heartily recommended, a year on.
-Beautiful shape and colour
-Nice weight and balance in the hand
-Writes beautifully smooth
-Very comfortable to use (Could use for hours without tiring)
-Doesn't come with a converter
-Not ideal on cheap paper
Just remember that fountain pens need regular cleaning and maintenance to keep the ink flowing nicely. Overall, I'm really happy with it. Looks and feels beautiful in the hand :)
They are great writers in my opinion. I find the medium nib on it far more pleasurable to write with than my Lamy or Diplomat mediums.
The reason I don't love the pen overall is that ink tends to seen into and dry up in the feed and hard starts can become apparent after only 2 days with some inks (in my case, darker ones).
Inks I've had hard starts with:
Pelikan Edelstein: Black
However, this can easily be rectified by dipping the nib in water for <2 seconds and wiping with tissue but, It's not something I expect from a pen in this price range. It is perfectly livable for me as these pens stay on my desk.
It also seems avoidable by using the pen every day.
If the nib wasn't as amazing as I believe it to be then I would have given this 2/3 stars and I wouldn't own 5 of them.
Pity. I’ll have to continue my search for a classy looking mid-range, mid-priced fountain pen. This one is not it.
