Whether your history teacher in high school left you believing history was the dullest subject in the universe, or you are an avid lover of history, this book is for you. Not only Texans and all who visit Texas Parks but all Americans benefit if they know history about their country and the Great Depression which preceded World War II. James Wright Steely has done an incredible amount of research of the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) with amazing thoroughness. CCC records are among the most difficult to locate as they are scattered, fragmented, or missing. A gifted writer, Steely presents an organized, smooth-flowing history through local and federal politics and interested persons who saw the value of preserving our natural resources. Journalism and history majors enhance his innate ability. From the introduction to the last appendix, this book will keep the reader's attention. James Wright Steely has brilliantly shown the adage, "the more a person learns, the more he realizes he has yet to learn." Although I am considered a CCC historian, this is certainly true for me. Parks for Texas can be considered the Bible of Texas CCC and Texas Parks history. If I could, I would give this book 10 stars.

Jim Steely has written a thorough history of the beginnings of the Texas state parks. This is no small task as the state of Texas is large and the politics at both the local and state levels is often complex. Steely has mastered the archival resources distilling the complex and detailed into a very readable testimony. For the parks in Texas owe much to the Civilian Conservation Corps, one of a number of New Deal programs that produced park infrastructure still used by park visitors today. While Steely has illuminated the details of local politics and the work in individual parks he does not forget to tie the local events to the big picture in Washington. This book is another of many books to point to the wisdom of the C.C.C. in developing the nation's state and local parks, national parks, national forests and other public lands. I much enjoyed Steely's writing style --- complete, crisp, clear and, every so often, a bit ironical. His love for the legacy of the New Deal is evident. Great reading and great scholarship!

Parks for Texas is a fascinating account of the creation of the Texas state park system. Steely deftly weaves political, architectural, environmental, and social history into a rich and compelling text. His examination of the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Texas during the depression is meticulous, and is brilliantly placed within the anxious social climate of rural Texas. If you are interested in parks, architecture, political history or just want to know more about how we have changed our view of landscape in the 20th century, this book is a must read. Certainly, if you relish things Texana, this is an absolute necessity for your library. Steely has produced an educated, insightful work, that will no doubt become a classic text on the revoultionary works of FDR's New Deal. Enjoy.
