Mr. Peacock has an ability to draw a scene and send smells and temperatures and flavors with his talented word-smithing. To my delight, my vacation was in Hawaii.
The narrator is a young boy who grows into a man that bartends at the Tiwaka's Tiki Bar & Grill on one of the Hawaiian islands off of Oahu. The bartender's name is 'Boss' at least that is what Tiwaka says...who is Tiwaka? An amazing Parrot that will answer any direct question for a piece of chocolate. He is a very wise Parrot.
The story is a set of short tales about the narrator and his life and the animal and human friends he makes throughout his life. This novel involves the first third of his life. When he speaks of his dog, Ococ, you will find yourself reliving every moment you treasured with your pet. When he takes you surfing, you can feel the surf and sun.
When he falls in love, your heart holds it's breath! You realize that you care about this gentle Hawaiian Bartender. You cry with him, you laugh with him, you ache with him.
This book was a delight to read and I can't wait to download his next one.
I was not sure what to expect from a title like this, but I was quickly surprised, and continued to be amazed by the quality, realism, yet uniquely magical story that the author brought to life here. Having been to Maui, and some of the locations depicted in this book, it was wonderful to revisit and relive some of the special aspects of the life and times in the most beautiful islands in the world. I was thoroughly captivated by the way the story brought the reader so quickly through time zones and latitudes so completely into the captivating scenes and story line. Within pages, I felt like I was part of the ohana (family) at TIwaka's TIki Bar, and then was transported beautifully to land of the magical and mystical spirits that live on the island of Mauai and the House of the Sun. Order the next Coco Moco Loco for me!
His depiction of the local community , the island guardian amaukuas, like the Hawaiian green sea turtles and dolphins, the alluring surf descriptions and feelings of true connection to the aina (home land), all effortlessly bring you into a story that you do not want to end.
And luckily, this is not the end. I was so happy to see that the story of TIwaka and friends continues on, and reading the two subsequent books in the series," In The Middle of the Third Planets Most Beautiful of Oceans," and "Tiwaka Goes to Waikiki," were all that I could have wished for.
This is the very first time that I felt compelled to write a review for the many, many books that I have purchased and read from Amazon, and I did so because this, and the follow up books are my very favorite. This author, Mr. Everett Peacock has totally attracted my attention. I have spent quite a few years in Hawaii, and he seems to be able to bring back and highlight so much of the special beauty and spirit of times gone by, and still be able to bring it all back; with humor and a down to earth believability, that seems to speak directly to the reader. I am sure that anyone that is Hawaiian, or Hawaiian at Heart, or that someday wishes to visit the Islands, will thoroughly enjoy "The Parrot Speaks in Chocolate", and the rest of the trilogy.
FIVE STARS- TIWAKA NO KA OI!
