Parrot ZIK - The World's Most Advanced Wireless Headphones
Listening to music and being insulated from external noise are features that more and more Smartphone users are looking for. Parrot has designed the perfect solution to address these desires, introducing wireless headphones that act as an extension of your Smartphone. Like your Smartphone, ZIK has integrated a sensitive touch panel, giving hyper-intuitive access to the various features available. For optimum listening comfort while on the phone, ZIK is equipped with two technologies for pinpointing the sound of your voice. Combined with the use of a double microphone, the bone detection sensor detects and analyzes the vibrations of the jaw in order to detect only your words and remove any background noise.
Recreating the Musical Image
For a brand-new listening experience, Parrot has paid special attention to the audio output from ZIK. The headphones provide you with powerful DSP (Digital Sound Processor) algorithms which reconstructs the sound, giving you the impression that the music is coming from in front of you; this is the "Parrot Concert Hall" effect. Lastly, to insulate you from external noise, Parrot has developed an ultra-high performance active noise cancellation system which eliminates up to 98% of ambient noise. While traditional ANC audio headphones only use two microphones to analyze ambient noises, ZIK has 4 microphones located inside and outside each earpiece offering the user complete clarity whilst listening.
Parrot Audio Suite
Parrot Audio Suite is the free Android / iPhone / iPod remote application dedicated to the Parrot ZIK design by Starck. The application allows the end-user to easily configure and modify the products configuration and parameters through the iPhone/iPod/Smartphone user-interface, including: Parrot Concert Hall effect, equalizer, Active Noise Cancellation, system, helpdesk, and battery level.
Adjust the Volume & Change Track
Sliding your finger vertically on the touch sensitive control panel adjusts the volume of your music or the caller voice. Sliding your finger horizontally on the touch sensitive control panel plays the next track or returns to the previous one.
Parrot Concert Hall Effect & Equalizer
The Parrot Concert Hall audio effect allows you to simulate a musical scene. This effect can be activated and controlled using the Parrot Audio Suite application. The Parametric EQ is a 7 bands equalizer. The user can choose from among the various presets (Flat, Pop, Club, Punchy, Deep, Crystal, User) to adjust the frequencies to the style of music you are listening to.
Automatic Pause & Automatic Play
Remove your headphones to put your music on hold or press the right panel with your finger. Place your headphones on your head to start playing music.
ANC & Battery Level
The active noise reduction can be switched on or off directly by using the switch in the ZIK menu. The battery level menu menu allows the user to know the current state of the ZIK's battery.
Take/End/Refuse a Call & Switch Dual Call
Tap on the right headphone to take or end a call, touch the panel for two seconds to reject it. Sliding your finger horizontally on the control panel allows you to switch between two calls.
System & Helpdesk
The system software update screen displays the current ZIK name, and the current ZIK Product Software version. By clicking on the Helpdesk icon, the URL redirects the user to a dedicated page.

I'm an early adopter of technology, so I bought this `sight unseen' the moment it was released. I had been in the market for a good wireless headphone/set and had been disappointed with what'd I'd experienced so far (most recently with the Novero Rockaways). So while I waited and tested other products, I continued to use my Bose QC2s. Ultimately, what I was looking in a headphone/set was (1) solid sound, (2) wireless/Bluetooth capabilities, and (3) solid headset capabilities. Fit was also very important and one of the reasons I started moving away from my Klipsch S4is - I could never get a good fit with those. And then lastly: battery life/longevity. Anything else would be a bonus. What appealed to me about the Ziks was all fancy gadgetry. With that all said, the following is how I came out on this set:
Sound/Audio Quality - This is paramount. I spend most of my time listening to music on my subway commutes and on airplanes, so this is by far the most important characteristic for me. I think the Ziks produce sound beautifully, really beautifully... but only when powered on (more on this below). I found sound fidelity to be rich - all the lows, mids, and highs were easily discernible even with music on my iPhone (much of which is compressed to 256kbps AAC).Read more ›
Another disclaimer: I don't have experience with other noise cancelling headphones, this is my first pair.
So, when I heard that Parrot was going to pursue something like this last year, I was intrigued. I have experience with Parrot's noise cancelling technology with my cars which I have equipped with Parrot bluetooth hands-free audio systems. In my experience, they offer the best performance amongst the other competing options.
When the Parrot Zik was finally released, I immediately purchased a pair. Sure, they are spendy, but IF they could help me accomplish a phone call in a noisy setting, that would be reason enough for me to keep them. Music playback was of secondary importance for me...as long as they played music back at acceptable sound quality, that would be fine.
After having my pair and giving them a few tests, let me just say I am EXTREMELY satisfied with them. And here is why:
1) noise cancellation is effective.Read more ›
I prefer blocking outside sound as much as possible to reduce having to listen at high volume. This especially helps phones calls. IEMs are best and I like the small size for convenience and traveling. They fit well in my pocket when I am not using them. Even though I see travelers with full size headphones, most are too large for my taste - I leave mine at work and at home.
The Zik are very stylish and while they cover my ears (barely), they fold flat and are the most compact full size headphones I own. I like the wire/wireless design. This will be handy when traveling by plane. One problem with my Shure S530's and several pairs of Etymotics is the wires eventually degrade. In most cases the manufactures have repaired or replaced the headphones but I hate going through the process and waiting.
I am not a fan of noise cancellation. I think it is inferior to isolation and I worry that it distorts the sound. However, my ears get tired of having the IEMs in my ear canal and full size headphones are not great for travel. The Ziks fill the void - great travel partner by offering a compact design, reduced noise, and have good sound.
+ Design - the metal parts are shaped in such a way to provide strength and the unique swivel and pivot allow for a comfortable fit. The leather headband is padded and not too wide - they look less bulky and compact for travel.Read more ›
