Kim Bongiorno is the author, freelance writer, public speaker and blogger behind Let Me Start By Saying. Her work appears in seven humor anthologies, including the NY Times Bestseller I Just Want to Pee Alone. She had way too much fun writing her fiction anthology, Part of My World: Short Stories, has completed her first ridiculously cool YA novel and is now writing a Middle Grade novel because her kids told her to.
Kim has written for The Washington Post, Parents Magazine, Babble, The Huffington Post, Nickelodeon, Scary Mommy and over two dozen other media outlets. Learn more at KimBongiornoWrites.com or LetMeStartBySayingBlog.com.
Short stories are far harder than they appear, but Kim Bongiorno has mastered the art. In her eclectic collection, she give us a delicious taste of 21 worlds using minimal words. Sensual and surprising, inspired and humorous, Part of My World is a magic carpet ride through Kim's wildly creative imagination, and you'll beg for the ride to never end!
It is apparent that Kim has a love of words, and this collection certainly proves that she has a true talent for using them. Kim's skillful use of imagery took me along with her to these captivating places in her imagination. I was there in that field with her, "Neon butterflies swirled around my head, putting on a show." Like the character in Kim's Not-So-Goldilocks, my own mouth watered, as Kim served up a little taste of, "Tiny, sugar crystals sprinkled across peaks of oats," and finally, she hit me with the fear of a daughter as she listened to her father, "calling her name, his voice fueling her tired muscles to go faster, to survive." Kim was able to take me to these places I wouldn't otherwise know, and I look forward to visiting many more.
Kim is a gifted writer. She has the ability to make you snort with laughter while reading one story, and tear up with emotion while taking in another. I adore her collection of short stories, "Part of My World," and I have been a fan of her blog, LetMeStartBySayingBlog.com, for years. When you finish her book, check out her blog -- it features some excellent creative nonfiction in addition to her popular humor pieces. I always look forward to reading whatever Kim writes!
I have loved Kim's blog for a long time, partly for the way she can mix snark and humor about motherhood with her more serious fiction pieces. I'm so glad she came out with this book. It does not disappoint. Each story is richly told, adding just enough detail to form a picture in the reader's mind, yet not giving too much away. Her writing stimulates your senses, revs up your imagination, and keeps you turning the pages for more. I can't wait to see what else this author does!
What I enjoyed most about this book is the way Kim seems to effortlessly transport you with each story. Her writing is descriptive and rich. I love the format of short stories. I imagine the challenge to create a well written, short story is infinitely harder than a novel where you have all this time to develop characters and pull people in. Kim accomplishes this in just a few short pages and successfully takes you on a journey with each one. Love.
I knew Kim was a wonderful writer, but I had no idea she had such an incredible talent for fiction. The stories in this book are like chocolates in a deluxe sampler box, each a different flavor, sweet and delicious in its own way. I savored them, loving every moment - and like those chocolates, I wanted each story to last a little bit longer, but at the same time I was eager to discover what the next flavor would be. Thank you, Kim, for a book full of fat-free enjoyment.
Every story in this book left me wanting more. So many raw and vulnerable characters, so many eloquent descriptions and so many juicy emotions. The book was pure artistry laced with indulgence. I felt like I was reading someone's diary... and every story was my favorite part. I demand a part 2! Or better yet, a 500 page book where Bongiorno chooses just one of these delicious tales and develops it into a novel. Bravo!
Kim captures your attention from the first word to the last. The way she weaves her words into these stories is exceptional. I felt like I was transported into each of the scenes that she creates full of captivating imagery. I downloaded this on my iPhone and devoured the book in one sitting. However, these stories lend themselves to be read more than once due to their rich content. Kim, these are beautiful. Thank you for sharing parts of your world with us. - Mel at According to Mags and Night Light Stories
