We make IoT easy. Of all the IoT platforms out there, we’re the only one that gets you online in minutes, not hours. Forget all the frustration and focus on your application.
Describe your product in 3 words.
Intelligent. Internet. Connectivity.
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
We were building a connected lighting product and saw a lot of other entrepreneurs around us who were trying to connect physical products to the internet and struggling to do so because of all of the technical challenges. So we built a little chip inside our lighting product that connected it to the internet and turned around and said: is this useful? Would you buy this? All the other entrepreneurs said, “Yeah this is super useful, I would love to have something like that. So as a result we took that chip and turned it into a development kit that people can use to build prototypes of IoT products and eventually scale.
What makes your product special?
By far it’s ease of use. Our customers can get a product online in minutes. If you use anything else, it is likely it will take you hours, days, weeks or months to get your product online. Not only is it easy to use, but it is easy to use while keeping your product secure and reliable.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
Developing people. I like to hire great people. I love to see them grow and develop into something more by coming into a startup and taking on big problems and tackling those successfully, growing up as a result.

Their web-based IDE is mostly great (One area that needs improvement: the Find function is unnecessarily difficult to use).
The webhook functionality is very useful for integrating Particle devices with the rest of the web, and I particularly find their internal message subscription service useful and impossibly fast at sending messages between your Particle devices.
Over time reached out to Particle support more than once and always had a very positive experience. Additionally, the community support for Particle-specific functionality is great. And of course for more generic stuff, arduino is second-to-none when it comes to online prototyping support.
A few times I've looked into getting a cheap arduino clone with integrated wifi, but the convenience of their cloud platform and quality from Particle is more than worth the added expense.
With that being said, I do like the Photon. Particularly being able to program it over WiFi instead of having to hook up a USB
The device is great and the form factor far exceeds the ESP8266 v3's but the development expierence was too involved. Wifing to the device and doing a bunch of wacky stuff is not what I want to do as a software engineer. I shelved the photon and will probably pass it on to my daughter in the months ahead for her to tinker with. If you are experienced in this stuff you may want to get something that is more to the point and less on the rails.
I used mine to add IoT features to my multi room speaker selection unit
The unit is now hidden in the basement and I use my phone to turn speakers on/off around the house :)
If you are just entering the IoT field or have been a maker for a while this is a great board. Everyone interested in IoT should have at least a few of these boards.
