This is a fantastic first novel!
The writing makes you feel like you are right there.

Many of the reviews that I have seen on books will say something like "It was so good I sat down and read it all in one sitting."
You can't do that with this book.
Mr. Jarvis makes every word count. This is a rare talent anymore. He will say more on one page than many writers will say in one or two chapters.

You will not want this book to end.
I wish I could have given more than 5 stars for this book.

I will be looking forward to many more books by Mr. Jarvis.

Can you truly know who you are if you don't know your family's history? The Kosar patriarch has kept his past a well-guarded secret until there is a death in the family. Now at a loss Stefan Kosar strolls down memory lane to the years leading up to the Nazi German invasion of his family homeland of Slovakia and the effects that moment had on his entire world.

Tomas Kosar is a Slovakia patriot and a delegate for the Slovak People's Party when Germany creates political unrest for the Czech Republic. Tomas rebels against the impending oppression that he sees coming for his country resulting in him being labeled a traitor and taken as a political prisoner. With their father in prison Stefan, the oldest son, will have to leave graduate school to come and help with the family's clothing factory while trying to keep his hot-tempered, revenge-seeking brother Patrik in check if he want to make sure Patrik doesn't end up in prison as well. Things are further complicated when Maria, the daughter of their father's long time business partner, shows up to get the factory back on track. Life is in full turmoil for this broken family as they try to keep their family business running, save their father and find some modicum of happiness.

In my humble opinion this book can easily be labeled as literary perfection. It is rare that you come across a story that is so moving that when disaster strikes you feel the same loss and rage that the characters feel. Author William Jarvis has done a masterful job bringing his characters to life and dropping the reader in the middle of a tense political climate, where at time you feel like there is no hope for this family that is only trying to survive.

This novel brings me back to a time when most people in Eastern Europe lived in fear and where brutality was a common occurrence. It is amazing how Jarvis is able to make his characters real and alive. The narrative is character and dialogue-driven with a pace that will keep the reader glued to his reading corner. "The Partisan" is a historical fiction that will send chills through your spine because the conflict and the terror are told in such a way that they become palpable. I have read a lot of novels about war-torn Europe and I am not new to the brutality of that era but this story stands out because of the author's excellent writing style and creativity.

Just finished this book in paperback. This is a must read. It would be great for a book club. A combination of history and great character development told in a unique and little known setting. The book includes a romance, an action packed survival, strong female characters, a sociopath villian, and true information about a little known part of World War II. I will be looking for more books from this author. A++++++

Even though this is a novel it still portrayed an area that is not mentioned a lot in WII. It kept your attention and you came to love the characters and cried with them.
