- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2024Chomsky considers Holocaust denial absolutely detestable, and he has never defended such an egregious and absurd belief. He merely defended their right to express it. Noam clearly states "If you're really in favor of free speech, then you're in favor of freedom of speech for precisely for views you despise."
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2003Allegedly an investigation of Noam Chomsky's anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial, "Partners in Hate" relies on guilt by association to "prove" its case. The case itself is rather simple: in the late 1970s a professor - Robert Faurisson - of twentieth century French literature at the University of Lyon in France was fired for questioning the Holocaust publicly. In 1979, a French friend of Prof. Chomsky, Serge Thion, asked him to sign a petition supporting the freedom to express opinions without persecution (Faurisson had been harassed and beaten up for expressing his views.) Chomsky signed it, as did 500 others, but the French press called it "Chomsky's petition" and accused him of Holocaust denial. In response, Chomsky wrote an essay on the difference between freedom of speech and supporting someone's cause, giving Thion the right to print it wherever he saw fit. Thion made it the preface of Faurisson's 1980 book about his anti-Holocaust findings. This action put the nail in the coffin to people who had never read Chomsky (who has repeatedly called the Holocaust a crime against humanity and has never denied it happened.) During the whole affair, Chomsky never met Faurisson and claimed he never read any of the Frenchman's writings, writing in the essay that Faurisson was an "apolitical liberal." From 1980 this pseudo-debate rambled on, until Werner Cohn produced the now long out of print "Hidden Alliances of Noam Chomsky" in 1988 and then retitled it "Partners in Hate" in 1995. Whatever the title, this work claims that Chomsky is a crypto-Nazi based on the fact that he stood up for Faurisson, that he has alleged contacts with an French cypto-Nazi outfit called "The Old Mole" (La Vielle Taupe), that some of his books were sold by a pro-Nazi publishing company called "The Noontide Press" and that he is an anti-Semite for criticizing Israel. I checked Noontide Press; the only item of Chomsky's they were selling was a recording of one of his speeches, probably released by Alternative Tenticles, the only label which releases Chomsky material. Cohen's evidence concerning the Old Mole was in French with no translation; I don't read French, so it's useless. The Faurisson angle has been debunked, which only leaves the criticism of Israel, which is a simple case of "freedom of speech for those who say what we like." Like the endless investigation of President Clinton, Cohn piles on charge after charge, hoping that one will stick.
[Prior to writing this book,] Cohn was a professor of English at a Canadian university whose only non-Chomsky book was a small ethnographic study of the Rom (Gypsy) people written during the Nixon administration. Chomsky had over twenty books under his belt by the time Cohn came on the scene with "Hidden Alliances..." and the "controversy" was obscure enough so that somebody could latch on to it for their own purposes and promulgate their own version of what happened for American readers. Interestingly enough, this was Cohn's last book and apparently the only work printed by Avukah Press, named after a pre-WW II Left-Zionist organization long defunct (which Chomsky was a member of!)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2021The title is inaccurate. Chomsky is in no way a holocaust denier. I glanced at the book for clarity, but would NEVER buy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2010Every quote and contention presented in this book is painstakingly researched and referenced. If only Chomsky himself did as good a job researching his sources as this author! A world would be a better place today. Fact is that majority of Chomsky opinions are based on lies, fudged quotes and half-truths. This is especially true for demonstrated connection to various antisemitic and Holocaust denying filth like Faurisson, Hamas, Hezbollah, Hugo Chavez, Ahmadinejad and others. Chomsky knows it but he doesn't care. His business model is based on delivering lectures for pay, then transcribing the same lectures for sale as articles, books and audio-tapes.
"Chomsky has a deep disregard of, and contempt for, the truth; a monumental disdain for standards of inquiry; a relentless strain of self-promotion; notable descents into incoherence; and a penchant for verbally abusing those who disagree with him."
Dr. Paul Postal, MIT linguist.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2002This rather silly book is about a very silly individual and his machinations to further his own blend of antiAmerican hate. I am delighted to see the smug Noam Chomsky taken apart and revealed for what he is a neoNazi and antisemite, far left extremist. While his linguistic researches are very important, Chomsky seems to feel that combined with his prestigious academic post they qualify him as some sort of expert on geopolitics and the world in general. The man all but would proclaim himself king of a New World Order were he given the opportunity to. In the murky underworld where the far extremist left meets the far extremist right, we encounter the exploits and shenanigans of Noam Chomsky, a man who will engage in the most outrageous polemic, distortion, outright lying, slander, and scandal to boost his book sales and increase his notoriety. Despicable! Chomsky's own particular brew of antiAmerican hate has a million coffeehouse intellectuals teeming. And, it is precisely for this reason that it is good to see a book revealing his connection to French Holocaust deniers ("a sort of apolitical liberal", as Chomsky so eloquently describes them) and neoNazi groups. The arrogance of these academic elites is inconceivable. This book is to be recommended to all your closet Marxist "friends". Also recommended Kevin Coogan's _Dreamer of the Day_ for another look at the meeting place between the far right and the far left extremes. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2005I read this 'diatribe' a few years back when I was in college writing a dissertation on Noam Chomsky's criticisms of America. I would suggest that Cohn ( a Jew himself ) is rather more than a neutral observer. A quick look at his publications reveals his apparent obsession with jewish issues:
"Half-Jews in Nazi Germany"
"International Trotskyism on the Jewish question"
"Israel Shahak's writings on the Jews"
"Noam Chomsky's writings on Israel and Jews"
How about the simple explanation: Cohn is a pro-Isreal and pro-Zionist and this is merely a personal attack on someone who is far more respected, articulate and relevant that he is.
