A nation divided in wartime invites its own defeat. Yet that is precisely how America is facing the global war on terror. In a brutally honest assessment, David Horowitz and Ben Johnson show that the American left, led by the Democratic Party, is waging a ferocious political war against its own government that has left our country more seriously divided than at any time since the Civil War. And the consequences could be disastrous.
In the fight against Islamic terrorists, America faces perennial questions that have become suddenly urgent: What is legitimate criticism of military policy in wartime? When does criticism cross the line and undermine the national interest? Democrats now routinely cross that line, Horowitz and Johnson show. Their candid and explosive reporting forces us to confront the consequences of these unprecedented attacks on the US war effort.
Examining the anti-war arguments of Democratic leaders like Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi, Party of Defeat reveals their fundamental misunderstanding of our enemy and an antipathy to the American cause going back to Vietnam. As radical Islam emerged in the 1970s, it found an ally in a left-wing establishment now thoroughly conditioned to blame America first. Our failure to confront the religious thugs who humiliated us in Iran encouraged the increasingly aggressive and deadly Islamist movement that eventually drew us into full-scale war.
Yet the cowardice and neglect of the Carter and Clinton years pale in comparison with the Democrats defection from the war in Iraq a war they first authorized then abandoned. This betrayal of our forces in the field has opened, incredibly, a domestic front in our country s fight for survival against an enemy fanatically devoted to our extermination.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Horowitz collaborates with his FrontPage Magazine coeditor Johnson in a vitriolic attack on the left's cowardly betrayal of the American cause, singling out the antiwar stances of John Edwards, Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi for special reproach. According to the authors, a nation divided during wartime is a nation that invites its own defeat, and they argue that through ignorance and design, Democrats have obstructed presidential policy, undermined American security and continually failed to grasp the nature of the Islamofascist threat. Cataloguing Democratic miscalculations from the Carter administration on, the book asserts that Carter encouraged the Iranian revolution, Clinton fatally ignored bin Laden and Bush's wiretapping program was perniciously leaked to the New York Times. Their earnest moralizing overshadows these compelling fact patterns as Horowitz and Johnson omit intellectual or historical contextualization that might ratchet down the fever pitch of their argument; sadly, this sensationalism comes at the expense of some truly effective excoriations of liberal figures—particularly a brutal and delicious takedown of Frank Rich. Review

Party of Defeat is a well-documented and disturbing account of the unprecedented attacks by leaders of the Democratic Party on a war they supported and then turned their backs on. In a democracy, criticism of war policy is legitimate and necessary. But deliberate undermining of a war policy, the authors urge, is another matter entirely. Every American concerned about the future of their country in the war on terror should consider the arguments in this book. --Senators Jim Bunning, Tom Coburn, James Inhofe, Jon Kyl, Jeff Sessions, Rick Santorum; Representatives Ginny Brown-Waite, Howard Coble, David Dreier, Peter Hoekstra, Peter King, Howard Buck McKeon, Mike Pence, Ed Royce, Jim Saxton, John Shadegg, Lamar S

Party of Defeat is an eye-opening account of one of the greatest political betrayals in American history: the unprecedented attack by leaders of an opposition party on a war they authorized and on America s commander-in-chief while America s troops were still in harm s way. --Sean Hannity

With clarity and logic, together with detailed documented facts, Horowitz and Johnson trace the history of terrorism in America, and the responses of Democratic leaders to the nation's decision to defend herself decisively. Initially, Democrats recognized the threat, but eventually turned on the very decisions they had made, and the logic they followed, to knife our President and our military in the back. This recounting of the history of events up to 9/11 and subsequently shouldn't even be necessary. Anyone who has kept his eyes and ears open is aware of the facts. But many Americans insist on being willfully ignorant. Democrats have chosen to engage in treasonous actions for political gain.

The two authors point out that the rationale for the invasion of Iraq was based, not on the likelihood of Weapons of Mass Destruction existing in Iraq at the time, but on the evident intent and actions of Saddam to pursue the production of such weapons, and use them. And in addition, Saddam used WMD on his own people, killing hundreds of thousands, and the Iranians. Facts that show this are outlined clearly. Saddam had been given a truce, but the condition was that he would agree not to pursue WMD, and repeatedly Saddam broke this truce. The United States was patient for many years. Clinton saw the need to deal with him and said so. We also became aware that Saddam WAS cooperating with al Qaeda in particular, and terrorists in general. He was also moving with full steam to develop the very weapons programs he had agreed not to pursue. Going into Iraq was NOT for the purpose of harming the nation or the Iraqi people. It was strictly for the purpose of getting Saddam out of power. Numerous attempts to get him to comply with his treaty or step down and go into exile failed. The way in which the United States conducted the war showed that the intent was to depose Saddam, and every care was taken to protect the people of Iraq.

In the disinformation campaign that followed, a typical accusation was that the Baghdad Museum had been looted of 170,000 artifacts. In reality, there were only 170,000 artifacts total, most of which had been removed for safekeeping by staff. Only a few dozen were lost. But this type of information was never corrected, and was used to condemn President Bush. Also ignored was the fact that Saddam released all the criminals before he was deposed. Much of the subsequent violence was caused by these criminals. Disinformation was rampant, including that perpetrated by Joseph Wilson, who claimed that documents concerning purchase of yellowcake from Niger were forged months before he would have had access to them. Repeatedly, the authors show how the left used lies of their own to defame the President, who had been telling the truth all along. The complicity of MoveOn.org, Cindy Sheehan, other fellow travelers, and the media is also discussed. The book shows that the Red Cross and our military were also dragged through the mud.

This book will tell you what you need to know about the treachery, sabotage, and sedition of Democratic leaders. At this moment, it is a timely warning. Perhaps someday, we will be able to determine how many of our brave troops were murdered as a result of this relentless campaign. If we want to retain our freedoms and way of life, we MUST stand up to terrorists wherever they are found. This book will give you the facts that will help you to make a case against people who refuse to pay attention and who are intent on pursuing national suicide. For those of us who do not desire to share their intended fate, it is a must read.

In this thoroughly researched and heavily footnoted book, Horowitz and Johnson set forth and explicate with exacting precision the relentless campaign the American Left and the Democratic Party have pursued to discredit George W. Bush and the War on Islamic Fascism. Unfortunately many, if not most Americans have forgotten the details of how the Democrats and the Left have undermined our country's response to Islamic radicals beginning with the Carter administration.

The authors clearly organize their thesis into 5 sections: The Path to 9-11, The Response to 9-11, Why America Went to War, The War Against the War, and Conclusion. They demonstrate with unassailable factual narrative how Presidents Carter and Clinton, in concert with an anti-war leftist establishment and willing accomplices both in the mainstream media and the Democratic Party refused to confront our enemies, leading inexorably to the 9-11 attacks.

This was itself inexcusable, but it was unfortunately only a prelude to the shocking and unprecedented betrayal of our forces in the field - first in Afghanistan, then in Iraq. The Democrats first voted to authorize military action in Iraq using the same intelligence information the President had at his disposal, and then not only rescinded their support of our military while they were actively engaged in battle, but launched a full-scale political attack on their commander-in-chief, branding him a liar and a war criminal. This despicable and treasonous behavior has fractured America's resolve, damaged our troops' morale, and weakened the President's ability to prosecute the war. Top-ranking Democratic leaders have demonstrated by their statements and actions that they fail utterly to understand the nature of this war and its implications.

Every American owes it to themselves to become familiar with this material so that they can combat the misinformation campaign being waged internally - if unwittingly by some - on behalf of our enemies. Horowitz and Johnson have produced a tour de force analysis of what is quite possibly the most serious political betrayal in American history.

I work as a Nurse in Surgery. As a rule I do not follow politics closely. But with all of the controversy surrounding this last election and the disintegration of our economy I found myself wanting to gain more understanding of what led up to many of the issues being discussed. This book was recommended by one of the radio stations that I listen to on occasion. I found this book to be very thorough, well researched, and extremely eye opening. Especially in light of the newest terrorist attacks in India---America simply can not take the threat lightly. The explanations of how the Radical Left and the Democratic Leadership undermined the War On Terror is appalling. It left me wondering...Why? Why? Why? Do they want to see the war being fought on our soil and in our streets? Do they want to see The United States Of America fall? If not? Then what is their motivation? If it is for gain of personal power at the expense of all else---well---that is just beyond my comprehension. This book made me very angry at the Radical Left and our current Democratic Leadership. They are dangerous to the safety of the USA. I made a vow after reading this to become more politically active and much less complacent.
