Law & Order: Los Angeles 1 Season 2011

Season 1
3.9 out of 5 stars (36) IMDb 6.7/10

"Law & Order: Los Angeles" follows Detectives Rex Winters (Skeet Ulrich) and Tomas "TJ" Jarusalski (Corey Stoll) as they pursue cases through the diverse City of Angels. As members of the Los Angeles Police Department's elite Robbery Homicide Division, Winters is a straight-shooting ex-marine with a clear-cut world view as stubborn as he is, while "TJ," who grew up the son of an Oscar-winning Polish cinematographer, knows too well the dark underside that is behind-the-scenes Hollywood. Deputy District Attorney Morales (Alfred Molina) is a sarcastic realist who believes moral righteousness is great in theory, but ineffective in a street fight. Though he knows how to manipulate both his public image and the behind-the-scenes politics, he is still a killer in the courtroom who lives to see justice served.

There is only one bad thing about this series: NBC wrecked it with their unmitigated stupidity. It has 10.6 million viewers when it started and after NBC got cute with "creative upgrades - aka messing with the cast - they messed up the sequence of episodes so that Ulrich dies, Molina quits as DDA and rejoins the police, and then Ulrich is suddenly back for the last 5 episodes and Molina is back as the DDA. HUH? After NBC got cute viewers dropped to 6.3 million so NBC cancelled it. It seems NBC stands for the National Bozo Corporation. They ruined the Law and Order that would have brought a whole new life to the show after its successful 20 year run in NY. As Joni Mitchell sang prophetically (figuratively about about NBC) - "..they paved Paradise to put up a marking lot". And unfortunately for us, that's a wrap.

Why five stars? I'm a Law and Order fanatic, addicted to all of their variations, and this version extracted some of the concept's best ideas: Set the issue at the start, investigate. I wish there were more court time, but still, this version is excellent: focused, the classic "Martian" program: no family nonsense, nothing unrelated to define the problem, investigate toward the perpetrator, move to closure. Ball to the 45, the 30, the 10, and through the posts, just get the ball down the field. The sound is even better than all the others - they all want to have a droning musical note or chord layered in the background too much of the time, but here, everyone is easy to hear, and you don't have the silliness of L & O Season 1 with Logan's Miami Vice behavior or Jack's emotional outbursts. I think that's what killed this series: It was probably opposite flashy car crash - weepy PM soap combos that fed appetites for drama over substance. I'd never heard of it, then once I saw Episode 1, I just kept on ordering one after the other in a marathon.

One of the few good things on this show was actor Stephen Dorf. Although this show had plenty of flaws, I kept watching primarily for him. However, this was his last episode on the show and with that, I had completely had it with this reincarnation of one of my favorite shows, the original LAW AND ORDER set in NYC. The problems with this show are manifold. The worst is that it is trying to be a hybrid of the original show with a CSI show. So instead of the excellence of a team which had Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston in the gritty New York scene, there is this technicolor mess of a show trying to infuse us with the coolness of the hopped up LA scene. All this is missing is the Horatio from CSI Miami with his sunglasses to cement it as a truly unbelievable show. The CRIMINAL INTENT version of this show was also ruined by constantly reinventing a concept which worked. It too became unwatchable with Jeff Goldblum at the helm. My recommendation is to skip this show and stick to the reruns of the original, especially the ones with Waterston and Orbach in their primes.

Well I sort of like the way the show plays out from episode to episode......so far that is until I read the info for the shows that are still being downloaded......In episode number 9 ZUMA CAYNON Det Winters is fatally shot by a Mexican Drug Lord.......then well HOLD the PRESSES in the episodes that are still waiting to be viewed Det Winters is again living. He is noted to be in episodes 18, 20, 21, and 22. Oh and in episode 22 he is fatally wounded again. Episode 22 is titled WESTWOOD. Now then Morales also has two episodes where he is noted as returning to the police department and involved in the same action. The first is episode 9 which is titled SILVER LAKE and the next is episode (number 19) is titled CARTHAY CIRCLE. I am not sure if this is what will be happening as I am still waiting for the episodes to download to my system; but one of two things is a bugger in this matter. The first being that whom ever wrote the info for these episodes made a big ERROR, in which case AMAZON needs to fix this quickly or the studio was looking for a way to slide a curve ball to the viewers and while at it making a few bucks for the same episode just by renaming them.

Well I still say I like how the episodes I have seen so far have been produced and will press for either a correction of the information for the episodes that have been noted above or press for a refund for the repeat episodes that were just renamed.......

I've always wanted to see what they could do with the Law and Order franchise if they got it out of the confines of New York City. Maybe its because I'm a born and raised LA resident, but seeing most (some places are made up) locations and recognizing them definitely elevated the series for me. Its standard L&O fare, but there was nothing wrong with that, and it had the LA flair that you weren't able to get in any of the other series. Unfortunately, the show came on just as people were gravitating away from police procedurals, so it seemed doomed to one season from the start. Couple that with some cringe-worthy acting moments by an otherwise great cast, and I can't in good conscience give it 5 stars. That said, its an entertaining and refreshing take on the L&O franchise. Shame they didn't give it another season to flesh out the kinks.
