Product Description

Cuban boleros and Argentinean tangos constitute the core of Pasión's program. Yvan Cassar's ingenious and felicitous arrangements preserve and emphasize every song's musical fingerprint. Roberto Alagna's interpretations of the repertoire of 1950s and 1960s pop star Luis Mariano, C'est magnifique!, was a colossal success, selling more than 450,000 units in France alone and his last album The Sicilian follows this success with more than 400,000 units sold in France.

About the Artist

Roberto Alagna is a peerless communicator. No other tenor of our time radiates joy like his when he lifts his voice above an orchestra. His sensual tenor thrills whether deployed in opera or pop. Having some Spanish ancestry, he sings Pasión's music with total identification

A winner. This disc is one of classics, well chosen, with arrangements tailored for each according to genre. Mr. Alagna brings something of himself to these songs while at the same time respecting their traditions. The duet with Lila Downs will be a treat for fans of both singers. The inserted booklet includes Spanish texts for all the tracks (no translations) and a brief essay concerning the singer / making of the disc. This has already become of my favorites.

Most opera singers are unable to produce successful crossover programs. Roberto Alagna is unique in several ways; first, he began his career as a cabaret singer for eight years and never had the tradition classical schooling for opera; secondly, he has superb diction in all the romance languages, speaks them and can therefore interpret them with his signature passion.

A rare and gifted singer, noted for his French opera roles, Alagna has several other very successful crossover albums, "The Sicilien" went platinum in France in weeks. If you enjoy his voice, there are many selections available of both complete operas as well as familiar aria selections. "Duets with Angela Gheorghiu", his wife, is one of the most perfect blends of two opera voices ever recorded.

I have two of Alagna's other crossover albums -- C'est Magnifique and The Sicilien -- and love them both. Pasion is a winning addition. He has a great feel for this sort of music. For me, highlights of this disk are the duet with Lila Downs and La Llorona. His softer more lyrical singing is particularly good. If you are a fan of Roberto or a fan of this sort of music, you won't be disappointed.

I must admit, I thought more of these songs would have the lively rhythm I expected; but to complain would really be folly.
The music is marvelous, and Alagna sings as well as ever.
I must remark that Alagna's voice Improves with age (no sarcasm), and the quality of the music he sings is really quite remarkable also.
All in all, a very good buy.

I have enjoyed Roberto Alagna zHis beautiful voice, and a sensual, dedicated Operatic performer. One of his best Carmen at the Met!. This album entirely in Spanish is beautifully done, warm sensual and he's at home in this genre too! thank for doing this Roberto we all have benefited.

This album has now become one of my all-time favorite Spanish language collections--right next to Gloria Estefan's Mi Tierra, Eliades Ochoa's Sublime Ilusion, Domingo's De Mi Alma Latina and Buena Vista Social Club's debut album. Roberto Alagna handles all of these pieces with style, passion (hence, the title), and flawless vocalism. Fortunately, he approaches them like a singer of serious music which gives him an authenticity that might not work if he tried to "sound" popular, but the musical arrangements reinforce the cabaret nature of the songs: sometimes with simple accompaniment or more lush ones--but always tasteful. What results is an immensely entertaining mix of some of the best Spanish language music of all time performed by an outstanding singer in full command of his voice's range, dynamics, and colors--in perfectly accented Spanish (I"m a native speaker). Just listen to his duet with Lila Downs "Historia de un Amor" or "Piensa en Mi" or "Ella" or "Siboney" or his cool handling of tangos like "Besame Mucho" or "Esperanza." The inclusion of the Sicilian tune "Cu ti lu dissi" at the end always leaves me wanting more of this recording and this singer. Brilliant recording!!!

This collection of songs is a must for any lover of latino music! There is something here for everyone, from the passionate love song to mariachi. One of the many reason I love him is he reminds me of one of my favorite tenors, Mario Lanza, who also sang from the heart. Merci, grazie, and thanks, Roberto, for this wonderful collection!

Roberto Alagna is a winning performer, whether in opera or in all the other various styles of singing he has recorded. Clearly he has no hangups about 'crossover' versus 'classical'. He just sings, with gusto, and without being precious with his voice. (See the DVD of the Met's Carmen for more of the rough and tumble of this guy!) In addition, he adapts himself superbly to whatever genre he is singing in (compare Sicilien with this album), and brings excellence in the arrangements and performance of the accompaniment to what he sings. In this album, pay particular attention to the sheer charm of Cielito Lindo!
