When I was a young man, I used to wonder how people knew what they wanted to do in life. I had no idea. I just thought you got a job, earned some money and had fun at weekends. I didn’t think much beyond that, until I reached the age of 24 and realised, I spent 40 hours every week boring myself to a slow death. And then I found that most other people were doing the same, and it was normal. The thought of being normal for another 40, 50 or 60 years shook me to the core. And I think that was when I started to search for who I was and what I wanted out of life.
So, it was a poignant reminder when I read ‘Passage of the Stork’. A book of such eloquence, in which Maddy describes the pain and confusion of youth, the battles of mid-life, and the constant search to find herself throughout her life. On her journey, she accesses a variety of methods, including ritual, meditation and dance. Her understanding deepens, acceptance and hope arrive with the wisdom of age, but the passage goes on even when we reach the end.

In Passage of the Stork: Delivering The Soul (Springtime Books 2015) Madeleine Lenagh has written a very moving and eloquent autobiography. The author shares intimate details of her life, both the joys and sorrows, and the courage it took for her to take life-altering directions to be true to herself and bring peace to her soul. The challenges she faced inspired her to take a different course with her life, ultimately finding a more spiritual direction that she now willing shares with others in many ways. Author Lenagh’s story gives the reader courage to find new, positive directions, as life changes because of age, family relationships, health, and professional obligations. Of special interest to me, a professional musician, is Lenagh’s passage on page 43 of her book, where she writes of the profound effect playing Fauré's Sicilienne on her violin at a summer evening recital had on her. It brought me to tears, as it reflected exactly what I experience when I sing/perform: "I coax the soul of the song from the strings . . . come to me, let me sing you! I love this lyrical style and it suits me. I offer the song to the world, oblivious to the people in the room." A wonderful example of Lenagh’s eloquent writing style and ability to connect her readers to her innermost spiritual feelings. I highly recommend Passage of the Stork to readers looking for an inspiring personal accounting of having the courage to change one’s direction in life and deal with all the challenges that brings.
Madeleine has a talent for selecting the turning points at different times in her life and not bogging the reader down with details. Well written, candid, and personal.
