"Epley's prose vividly paints the world-changing events that happened in the Carolina piedmont through the words, sights and senses of those common folks, our forebears who lived it. He tells the Kings Mountain story better than I have ever read."
Charles B. Baxley, Publisher
Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution
"A well-crafted, immersive historical novel, with just the right level of period detail."
"(The author) uses some nicely characterized fictional characters within a creative and wrenching plot to illustrate how the split allegiances between American Revolutionary loyalists and patriots tore apart communities and families."

I found the book to be intriguing. It was like picking up a new Cameron Judd novel. Mr. Epley did a good job researching Historical data and phrasing it for the story. His plot kept me involved with the novel, and I resisted putting it away for the night.
The only reasons I did not give it 5 *s are grammar and spelling errors. There were too many places with misplaced modifiers, misplaced commas and apostrophes, and passive sentences that should have been made active. The result made the book a rather choppy read and caused me to stumble a time or two. I think Joe could have used a better editor, not from the standpoint of his historical detail, but for the mentioned errors.
In a novel, some license is acceptable with grammar et al; however, only as it is involved in dialogue. It should never be obvious in narration.
If I had known those errors existed, I would still have bought the book due to the intrigue.
I grew up 30 miles from where the battle of Kings Mountain took place and had only a vague notion of its immense significance in the Revolutionary War until I read this exciting book by Joe Epley -- A Passel of Hate. The historical facts are woven throughout a touching family story and keep the reader engaged to the very last page. As a lover of historical fiction, I'm always interested in the facts and drawn in by the story. Epley hones his story so sharply, it brings into focus the precise combination of determination, skill and luck it takes to be the victors in battle. Great job! And, great book!
