Photos of collectors and their hoards are an old favorite to fill up space in tabloids, magazines and for the two or three publishers who churn collector books with the magic words on the cover: Includes Price Guide but fortunately Ellen Land-Webber's book of photos is a world away from the folks who have shelves full of Avon bottles, Fostoria glass and Pez dispensers.
The collectors in these photos, surrounded by their passions, are a dedicated few who dare to be different. Apparently many of those featured didn't want to be named for security reasons. On page twenty a man sits in front of his historical maps of Transylvania, page thirty-nine features the owner of several railroad cars, he had to lay some track to display them after they arrived by road and page seventy-one has the cash register king with at least twenty-four in the photo.
How about Edsels, more than fifteen in a wood on page eighty-one and a lovely photo on 111 of a diving board with twenty-five paperback reprints of `Catch-22' from 1962 to 1968. The collector said that when the movie came out it sort of changed his perspective so he stopped collecting them and concentrated on his key-chain collection instead. My fave is the oldie who has restored to working order thirty old-time crawler tractors. Now that's a dedicated collector.
The book came out in 1980 and the photos were taken in the two previous years so surely many of these wonderful folk have died. I wonder what happened to their life's work. The photos are mostly whole page with generous margins making this a delightful book to look through.
