Editorial Reviews

Review

"Creating passion-infused learning environments where students are allowed to discover and have learning opportunities beyond the classroom is a best-practice pedagogy that is slowly but surely finding its way into classrooms. Pernille Ripp is at the forefront of this movement. I hope educators will give this book a chance as it gives ALL students the opportunity to be the driving force behind their own education."

--Joli Barker, 5th Grade Teacher, Press Elementary, McKinney, TX and Author of The Fearless Classroom

"All teachers gather "best practices," whether through training or time. But these techniques don't always work as planned. Pernille re-examines the common habits of the classroom and reveals new, more productive ways of cultivating passionate learners. From grades to school culture, she shows that nothing is free from critique when you fight for students."

--Angela Maiers, Educator, Author, Founder of Choose2Matter

"This book is an excellent guide to transforming your classroom culture and letting students take ownership of their learning. Pernille Ripp offers practical tools that will help all educators create a positive and innovative learning environment for their students."

--Todd Whitaker, Professor at Indiana State University, internationally-recognized education expert, and author of over 40 books, including What Connected Educators Do Differently

I saw Pernille speak at GoogleFest in Michigan this year (2015) and she is AMAZING. She doesn't pretend to have the answer to everything but she does try her best to provide you with helpful insight and some potential problem solving ideas. I would love to work in a school district with Pernille. This book clearly shows her passion. The other nice thing is that you can always reference her blog for things she mentions or the hand outs provided in the back of her book. One thing she mentions in the book that is really found to be accurate is that this isn't a book that you will necessary read through all at once. I come back to it from time to time when I need inspiration or just some encouragement.

This book changed me as a teacher. I first read this book several years ago in its e-book version. Pernille's words and thoughts changed the way I saw my job as a teacher and the way I viewed my students as human beings. The practical advice that she gives is incredible, but for me what was even more important was the thoughtful message that she sent on the need to place the power of learning back in the hands of our students. This book started me on a journey that has led me to the best places that I have been in my career as an educator. I recommend this book to every teacher I talk to and I wish, for all of our students, that it makes its way into the hands of as many educators as possible. More than any other "reform" in education, the ideas in this book truly have the power to turn our students into the most powerful learners that they can be. It also has the power to make teachers fall back in love with their jobs again and to find a power that they never even knew that they had.

Passionate Learners is a guidebook for creating a classroom that is student-focused and considerate of every aspect of a student's educational and mental well-being. It helps teachers pull back from being the focus of attention, while at the same time honoring the rigors of modern American educational systems. This is a must-read for teachers ready to re-claim their classroom and passion for teaching.

An easy read that makes you rethink many long held assumptions about how we teach. Pernille's passion for learning shines through her words and it's hard to read this book without wanting to make some changes in your classroom - big or small. I highly recommend this book to all teachers and challenge you to read with an open mind. Just because things have always been a certain way doesn't mean they can't change - especially when we know they aren't best for our students. Be the change in your classroom - you may be surprised what you hear when you start truly listening to your students.

I want to thank Pernille Ripp for being so open and honest about her own journey to create an environment that encourages learners to own and drive their learning. What I love about this book is how it is so easy to read and follow as you learn strategies with your own journey creating a class filled with passionate learners. To bring structure to each chapter she referenced: Then, Now, and Next. The question I hope each teacher that reads her book reviews the question in Chapter 2: Would you like being a student in your classroom?

I love how Pernille shares her story of the gradual shift toward a student-centered, passion-driven classroom. I've bought copies of this book for new teachers because I think it's that important for a read. As a former middle school teacher and now a college professor, I found myself drawn toward the authenticity, honesty, and approachability of the book. Now, as a college professor, I plan to use it with my pre-service teachers.

This is a must read for all educators! Pernille does an excellent job sharing practical tools that will engage and empower students. This book will challenge you to reflect and question traditional school practices. I love her format of then, now, next, and I believe. Pernille shares her questionnaires and self-reflection pieces. She writes on relationships, ownership of the classroom, homework, assessments, reward and punishment, traditional grading, innovation, and much more. You will thoroughly enjoy this one!
