"Gabriela Marie Milton's new collection of short poems and flash fiction offers a series of contemplative and intimate writings about the shifting landscape of love."
"The series transports us on a journey of love as much as it delivers us a thematically diverse set of emotions. This is a superb collection."
Manhattan Book Review, Jo Niederhoff
4 / 5 Stars
"No matter what mood you're in, you're sure to find something that will suit your need within these pages"
"Where Milton really shines is in her imagery. These are no Keats-style odes, with stanza upon stanza to describe a single vase. Her descriptions come out in briefer segments: one line here, another there. She doesn't paint details so much as she paints a feeling, with just enough precision that it becomes real nevertheless. Her words are chosen precisely, showing a distinct shade of blue or a particular floral scent. There is no laziness in her lines."

"Passions..." is filled with a wide array of poems to suit most any mood. There are also poems translated into Italian, and other short writings in the form of prose poems and flash fiction.
For me, books of poetry are not meant to be read straight through like a novel. I open "Passions..." to a random page every night and read a poem, prose, or flash fiction. Gabriela has a beautiful, intelligent style, weaving words into phrases that leave me pondering various aspects of life in our world as seen through Gabriela's eyes and imagination. She makes it easy to transform her words into images some sad, some happy, some erotic, some fantastic, aways enchanting, and thought-provoking. I highly recommend "Passions: Love Poems and Other Writings". I have not been disappointed by my nightly readings.
But, I also never would have thought I would be reviewing a book of poetry, much less buying one for my enjoyment.
A short while back, a blogger who went by "short-prose-fiction" liked one of the posts on my blog. Looking to see who was visiting, I discovered Gabriela Marie Milton and read a few fragments from some of her poems. Surprisingly, I found they touched me. I loved the images and memories her poems stirred in my mind.
I found myself returning to Gabriela's blog quite regularly to read other snippets of poetry, and I enjoyed them. The next thing you know, I'd ordered her book!
I'm not sure that I would go as far as to say I am now a poetry fanatic, but I have learned something about myself here, and I will have to check out more of this stuff called poetry. And I will be on the lookout for more by Gabriela Marie Milton.
While I am certainly not an expert on poetry, I would give Passions: Love Poems and Other Writings 5 out of 5 stars, if for no other reason than the effect it had on me. And, as far as my limited knowledge of poetry qualifies me to be a critic, I think this is an excellent book of poems and other writings.
In her poem, Sea Snake, we read her gorgeous words, "Your wet shirt coiled at my feet. Inside the echos of a pink conch, my love for you tosses like a newborn in a crib." She shares her sense of vulnerability and new love. In another favorite, Love in Blue and Black, the rawness of love is felt with her words, "Ocean waves embrace the moon's pale chest instead of tears I shed naked pearls."
Her pages fill one with thought and provoke all sorts of new meaning to the finding and holding onto love. It is difficult to pick a favorite as each poem has something unusual and magnificent to offer. I found myself feeling every word of her poetry in Wooden Bed. She gives us a glimpse of beautiful memories, and the instructions left for the one she loves but will leave behind as "guards are coming my wrists will be soon stamped - yours forever, from a concentration camp."
Each poem is a journey that is unsullied with the writer's brilliance. This book is one that will be cherished and read again and again throughout the years.
The book is set up into three parts. First, Love Poems, a generous collection of free verse that took my breath away. Part two has side-by-side poems, one in English, the other its Italian translation. And Part three has short prose that honestly, reads like poetry. All of it is sublime.
And none of it should be rushed. I read this collection over two weeks, savoring each offering in the darkness before sleep. A luxurious read for anyone who loves poetry and beautiful words.
