Top Customer Reviews
So you can imagine my utter disappointment to find out that this product failed in less than a year of receipt.
The hard drive worked fine; I purchased it to keep all of my personal files, photos, iTunes purchases, etc.
I own two computers; one desktop Intel Dual Core i7 and a HP laptop i5, both running on Windows 7.
My work computer is also an HP laptop i5.
One day I roll into the office, as usual, and hook up my drive to my personal laptop.
I see the light on the drive on steady, but the drive is not recognized.
I hook it up to my work laptop to see if it works on that and it was recognized.
I later took it home to try it on my home desktop; not recognized.
And yes, I've tried contacting tech support (and got a big fat phone bill) and they were of no help.
Spent a week researching on Google and all the various forums, but nothing seemed to work.
I eventually purchased a Buffalo Technology MiniStation Extreme 500 GB Rugged Portable Drive and it has been working fine so far.
I would strongly recommend against purchasing any Western Digital My Passport Essential series drives.
In total, my girlfriend and I purchased five (5) of these; two 500GB and three 1TB.
Three of them failed so far (one 500GB and two 1TBs).
And, yes, the voltage is fine and all of our electronics are equipped and plugged in with surge protectors, UPS systems, etc, so no, I don't think that constant power fluctuations fried out drives.
These drives are highly defective and unreliable, period.
If you buy a bare 2.5 inch SATA hard drive and an empty USB case for it, it is trivial to replace the case if it is damaged or if the USB connector gets damaged - just buy another case, pop your hard drive in, and viola, you're in business.
You'd think you'd be able to do this with this WD drive, but that's not the case (pun intended). This drive has the USB port soldered onto the hard drive controller, so if the port is damaged (easy to do if you accidentally yank the cord), you can't pop the drive out and put it in another case. You have to send the drive to a professional repair house at cost of thousand dollars or more....
I've had this happen to two of my customers and I simply will not buy Western Digital USB drives anymore. As a matter of fact, I insist on "building my own" by purchasing empty cases and bare 2.5 inch hard drives.
So please avoid this product and the nightmare waiting for you if the USB port gets damaged. It's not worth it.
Other than that, durability has been solid. Haven't had to replace the hard drive and I've managed to drop it only once, which I'm sure has contributed to its longevity.
If there's one thing that bumps this drive up to 5 stars for me though, it's the fact that while the root has software on it, you don't have to install anything to use it: on both Windows 7 and XP, it's just plug and go. That's a big deal for me because I never know what machine I might be connecting this to and I don't want to have to stop to install some drive manager, or say no to some installer splash screen.
If you want a lot of storage, USB 3.0 with backwards compatibility, and all of it packed into a skinny little container that doesn't want to push software at you, this drive makes a great pick.
