I had been using a Seagate FreeAgent Go 640GB portable drive for about three years now, and wanted something with some more space and higher transfer speeds. I purchased this drive for it's beefy 2 TB of storage space and speedier USB 3.0 interface.
Out of the box, you get the drive, a 15" USB 3.0 cable, soft pouch, quick install guide, and a 3-year limited warranty. The drive looks nice, and appears to be of good construction. Doesn't look or feel cheaply made. I like how compact it is. It's about an inch shorter in length than my FreeAgent Go, and maybe a millimeter or two thicker. The included soft pouch is a nice addition and helps keep dust and dirt off of it. Not an ideal case solution if you're prone to dropping things or somewhat rough with your belongings, so you might want to invest in a more rugged case. It works fine for me though as I keep mine in a messenger bag when on the go, and it's a nice addition considering most other drives don't come with anything. The included USB cable is long enough to plug into the USB port on the front of my PC and reach my desk's surface. So, thumbs up there.
Functionally, the My Passport Ultra 2TB works as advertised. Transfer rates are roughly 3x faster than that of a USB 2.0 drive. I noticed the difference in speed right away when transferring large files (1-5GB+), taking only 2-3 minutes instead of 5-10 minutes or longer depending on file size. I work with large media files all day long, so the bump up in transfer speeds is really nice. The drive is very quiet while running. You wouldn't even know that it's on except for a tiny little LED indicator light to the right of the USB connector port.
So, why only four stars? Hardware-wise, The Passport Ultra is no different from WD's regular Passport series of portable drives. They're the same exact drives, only slightly different in appearance. What the regular Passports lack from the Ultra is the soft pouch, the Ultra label, and WD's misleading labeling on the box that touts, "Auto & Cloud Backup Plus Security." The "Auto" backup is merely referring to WD's abysmal backup software included on the drive, WD SmartWare (more on that later). The "Cloud" backup is basically instructions on the box for setting up a DropBox account. No kidding! They're advertising cloud storage on the front of their packaging like it's a feature they're offering. Flip the box over and you'll see that it's nothing more than an advertising gimmick for DropBox with instructions on how to set up an account.
As for the included backup software, WD Smartware, they should consider renaming this to Dumbware or Stupidware, because it simply doesn't work. The software is supposed to keep your designated files and folders on your PC synced to your Passport, meaning, when a file is updated or a new file is added, Smartware is supposed to see those changes and update the files on your Passport the next time you sync. Unfortunately, the current version of Smartware has a bug where it doesn't notice any updated or newly added files and doesn't copy them to your drive when you sync, rendering the whole thing useless. People have been complaining about this on WD's support forum for a while now, and WD has yet to acknowledge it's customers about the issue on the forums or address the issue with an update or fix. This is highly unacceptable!
EDIT 2/23/14: Despite a new update for WD Smartware (v2.2.1, updated 11/25/13) which was supposed to, "fix an issue where files are not backing up properly in some instances," it still does not function properly. After running the update, the software often hangs for too long or freezes up altogether. So, I've given up on WD Smartware. I wish I could use Seagate's Manager software with this drive, as I never had a problem with that software.
In summary, the WD My Passport Ultra 2TB Portable External Drive is a really great drive. It's small, fast, quiet, and works as advertised. However, the drive retails for $30 more than the regular Passport model of the same storage capacity. All you're really getting for that extra $30 is a silly, soft pouch, Ultra labeling on the drive, and the feeling that you've been made a sucker for believing this product was anything more than it appeared to be. So save yourself a few dollars and get the regular Passport 2TB and put that $30 towards a better protective case.
EDIT 2/23/14: Depending on when you purchase the drive, the price may be cheaper than other, lesser drives. In this situation my comment about the more expensive price would be irrelevant. If you find this drive on the cheap, by all means make the purchase. It is a great drive, especially at a bargain price!
Pros:
- Lots of storage in small, compact form factor.
- USB 3.0 transfer speeds. Great for large media files!
- Included pouch keeps away dirt and dust.
- Included USB cable is long enough for some play.
Cons:
- Misleading labeling.
- Same drive as the regular Passport, except for pouch and Ultra markings.
- WD Smartware automatic backup software is garbage. Doesn't work as advertised! Use an alternate 3rd-party backup
solution.
For here's the secret with these drives: you can partition them, and have the partitions CLONED, but the remainder, as extra filespace or backup. So on one drive, you have the best of both worlds. Now of course everyone will tell you never have only one backup -- okay, but then you can CLONE THE WHOLE DRIVE using some other, less-used machine, to make your second copy, rather than go through it piecemeal again. For any kind of cloning process takes a while, when large. I use Macrium Reflect 5 Pro for this. You might prefer some other software. Clonezilla is a great choice, too, see my review on its CD, here in Amazon.
I now have 12 (or more?) of these WD Passports (in black, silver, red); 2 of which are the Ultra, reviewed below. I just love them, but the above quirks (and too the cord), will remain. It's not WD's fault: Windows won't allow the driver to install in the normal manner. I don't recall having any trouble with Linux Mint 13 or Fedora 17 recognizing them, either.
Original review follows, below.
====
Just like all the other 3.0 USB WD Passport drives, this one has a nuisance cord and that too-bright light. If you ever saw those keyring lights which are thumb-operated tiny but too bright to look at, then you know what kind of too-bright-light I mean. Great for the keychain. Not so great for a drive. LED would have been better, especially if mild green (no red or amber, please).
Comes also with a pouch that easily snags, a cross between nylon sack and satin. Shoulda been neoprene. But, you can use it for other things. Like, covering up the Perixx dedicated 'Peripad' Keypad sold also here in Amazon. Pouch fits it perfectly. That way you protect those nifty keys from dust. Drive doesn't need any protecting like that. For it, you can get kitchen liner, though I like to cushion my external drives within big old ladies' leather wallets. There's room for the peripherals, extra SD cards, even paper clips.
Cord too stiff, so you can't easily position the drive to avoid the light searing into your eyes; cord not long enough for the best deployment of the drive, which is to hook it up to a HUB MONITOR, so the power supply is not the computer. So buy the Tripp Lite 3.0 blue superspeed cord (3ft, sold here in Amazon), or I suppose some other one (but don't go for cheap, if you want durability and predictability). I did that, and my blue WD Passport Ultra works just fine.
The Ultra emits much more vibration than its earlier cousin the WD Passport. The Ultra is maybe 20% thinner, too. I got a pair of blue Ultras on sale for Cyber Monday. Not sure I'd buy them again, as the earlier cousin is heftier (I have four of the older ones, now maybe a year old, all are fine). The lighter the drive, the more problems it will have; but that's a guess. Will edit out this claim if it proves wrong.
Bear in mind that most monitor hubs are 2.0, so you won't get the 3.0 throughput. Your computer must also have a 3.0 port, for that high throughput to work. Most computers don't have them; even if you get a separately powered 3.0 hub, it also won't operate at high speed, if the computer itself doesn't have the same 3.0 USB port for the powered hub.
All that being said, the throughput is reliable. I have a 3.0 port in one of my laptops, and yes, it's faster then. Else, you get 2.0 speeds.
Important: the problem with larger external drives, is they need power. So you can't just expect your computer to support all that size when the drive itself is not separately powered. So you must hook up the drive to a separate hub, be it on a monitor or hub you buy, that itself IS powered. If you don't do this, your WD Passport won't always work. So don't blame WD, as some reviewers have. Blame ignorance, and then correct it.
One more hint: WD is like a Ferrari or Jaguar; it needs TENDER care. Don't bump it. For extra protection, I 'line' these drives either by putting the white plastic packaging they came in, underneath; or, lay underneath some fruit foam (after all, it's Christmas) or camp foam or even kitchen drawer liner (the squidgy waffle kind that sells in varied-color rolls at Walmart for $4, or maybe even here in Amazon, I didn't yet check). That way, even if you bump the table the drive will stay put. (I swear by kitchen liner, for all electronics. That, feathers, and unused makeup brushes.)
Finally, the WD SES driver will be needed. Usually in XP or Win7, this need is detected, but sometimes not. Eventually, if not detected, though the drive still works, sometimes it will seem NOT to work. In that case, use the driver. Microsoft knows about it, and will install it for you from its online driver base.
As for the WD's own included software, I don't use it, so have nothing to say. Like the other reviewers noted, it comes with an ADVERTISEMENT for Dropbox, not actual cloud storage. (Did you know, you have 5GB of free cloud storage right here in Amazon, anyway.) I'd rather use SD chips, pen drives or external drives, than the cloud. So can't comment on the Dropbox 'deal'.

PROS:
- 2 TB is a good size to store large quantities of data (including high resolution images) while travelling
- Fast transfer rates (typical for USB 3)
- Physical size is amazingly small for such a large storage capacity
- Weight is good for the capacity
- Good build quality, and seems durable and long-lasting (based on the fact I've had this for about a year now, have traveled extensively with it, and it's still working well)
- Powered through USB cable, so no need for a separate power supply, which is ideal for portability
- Has a small LED (beside the USB 3 port) to indicate the drive is being accessed
- Has small rubber feet at each corner to reduce slipping on surfaces and prevent scratching
CONS:
- Does not come with a carrying case or protective pouch
Both a pro and a con, the included USB 3 cable is very short (1.5 ft). This can be a bit annoying when using the drive, but can also be a good thing, since it allows for easier storage (see picture with cable in separately purchased case DURAGADGET Sturdy Solid Shock And Water Resistant Blue Case For Transcend Storejet M3, WD My Passport Ultra 2TB, Western Digital My Passport Ultra 1TB & Western Digital Elements Portable 2TB ).

the MP portable external HD came in a nice little package. It came in relatively quickly.
it came in with all the cables I need, and a little black pouch. It is even smaller than I anticipated which is a plus, for a portable device.
it is beautifully coloured, and in perfect condition.
Usage Review:
after using it for a few month, it still operates perfectly.
It is very quiet, and does not require external power.
in comparison to my old external hard drive(not to be named), which not needs external power, and is very loud, also trumps in transferring speed.
I used my external HD for pictures, music, and movies at times.
for a 1 TB device, it filled up quickly. In hind sight I should have purchased a large capacity device.
Overall Review:
the MP external HD is very pleasant to the eyes, small enough to be carried easily, and there are often sales or discounts on such units.
if you plan on using it for music and videos, I would recommend getting a larger one than the 1TB one I got. It tends to get filled up rather quickly.
It is extremely easy to use, just plug and go.
the transfer speed is very fast, and has held up over time.

A device like this, used with a WD Live unit will all you to fill up one of these babies with about 600 of your fave movies and then sit back and watch any movie you chose with the flick of a remote. No discs to change no getting up or moving. I've cleared up a lot of shelf space since getting these things. Entire stacks of shelf hogging dvds are gone now..
I gave it 2 stars because one worked, but one out of two is bad!
