Operation isn't too difficult, but it has no display, only blue lights that blink in different combinations.
Copying of the SD card is not automatic. To copy a card, power on the device, but leave it unconnected (no cable). Insert the SD card. Then tap on the battery level button - if you look closely you will also se the SD logo. A light will blink, but that doesn't really tell you anything. I place my hand on the device to feel the hard disk activity. If you listen carefully, you can also faintly hear the activity. After I started the transfer, I used the iPhone app to connect to the device and monitor the transfer progress.
WD, if you are reading this, what would make all the difference in the world is a display that tells you what is going on, with words, something more than various lights blinking.
20171216: I've been using it a few days now. I managed to work my way through the instructions, and figure out how to set the unit to copy SD cards automagically. That now works nicely, BUT, the imports are date stamped April 2016. Since it is December 2017, this is not very helpful. In fact, it is damned irritating because I've spent an hour searching for where to set the date, and so far I've found nothing. The closest I came to a resolution was a WD article telling me to be connected to a web browser. Not sure what they mean by that, but the unit is connected to my router (it will take two WiFi connections) which should be enough to let it get to a time server. But it seems to be unaware of the correct date. Very frustrating.
Another difficult feature of the unit is that if the unit is attached by usb to the computer, it no longer has an interface, it becomes a plain old ordinary hard drive.
20180115: further update. The unit has somehow figured out the correct date and time. I didn't tell it (never found where to do that) but it now records the date properly. After using this for over a month, my final conclusion is that it is quite useful for backing up your SD card without having a computer attached. And, even though Western Digital could have done a better job on the design, no other manufacturer appears to be offering something like this. If you need to back up photos or other files that come on an SD card or a thumb drive, this is a good solution.
A) It is NOT compatible with SDHC II U3cards. I can’t find any mention of this anywhere.
B) The My Wireless Cloud app is not well designed. It’s very difficult initially to find where everything is. Turns out I had to use the app AND access it through its web interface to configure it properly. Very Poor
C) WD tech support doesn’t respond to my email questions.
D) Most importantly for me, I just want to insert my camera SD card and have it automatically back up. It’s not initially configured to do this but after making the needed changes to the settings, it sometimes backs up and sometimes doesn’t.
This is my second unit and will be returning it as soon as I get home from vacation.
I will try an RMA but not holding out much hope really unhappy about this...
This drive does play Pex and it does a great job... Grand Kids streamed movies from cabin on a cruise ship two cabins away to a pair of Ipads worked perfectly I left it plugged in for the entire cruise... I have had the same success on airplanes... in an RV using a Roku and Apple TV box the apple box is the only device I have had a problem with...We played three different movies at the same time using Plex/roku stick and Roku 3 on a rainy crappy day in the Idaho Mountains... all of the movies are optimized for mobile which worked great but is a pain in the butt...
Had a little problem with shipping but as usual Amazon took care of the problem.
From what I can tell the majority of bad reviews seem to be rooted in the understanding of how to setup this drive, update it to latest firmware and media format (Optimized)... if you do all of that correctly this drive works like a champ plays the installed Plex Media Server great.
I recently took this device loaded with a selection of movies for kids and some for the grown ups on a Cruise... my grand kids cabin was two cabins away from the My passport drive and they where able to log into Plex with their Ipads and watch Kids movies while their parents did the same thing ,.. it was a cold windy day at sea and the cabin was the best place to hang for a couple hours...
I plugged the drive into Ac power and left it that way all week Accessing Music and videos from the Plex media server in both cabins... at one point we had 5 different devices access Plex from this great little wifi drive.
After the cruise we had a 4hr wait in LAX and I simply turned it on using the battery power for all to access as they wanted... it was really great to keep the kids occupied during the layover... once aboard the play I left the drive on in my carry on which was in the over head and the drive performed great.
I know that a lot of folks had problems and I can see how it might have been difficult... I ended up adding a wifi adapter to my desk top which makes using the drive much better than trying to use an Iphone to set the drive up... it can be done on an Iphone but much easier to use the WD software on the desktop, especially to install, configure and maintain the plex optimized files... I used the same PC that my Plex media server is installed on.
I had difficulty logging onto my home wifi nework... the way to go is to use a wifi enabled PC/laptop... using a wifi enabled PC allowed me to do everything including bridging to the internet to update the Plex meta files.
I love this drive it works great once set up adding new media is a bit clunky because of the need to optimize the files but once done it is great.
I used Plex, Handbrake and MCeBuddy to optimize the files all worked but MCebuddy worked best for me because it will drop the completed optimized files right on the My Passport drive as long as it is plugged into the network and accessible to MCEBuddy I still needed to connect to the PC/Plex(internet) to update the Plex library on the WD My passport drive to update/enable newly added media... this happens via the wifi nework... it all worked just like you are used to in Plex
I gave it five stars because it worked so well for my needs ...once setup
In the 3 days I've had this item, even after applying the latest firmware, it has crashed and/or malfunctioned every time I've tried to use it. It goes into all LED's flashing mode when backing up SD cards. It locks up and won't respond or shut down with any kind or combination of button pressing. It started failing to mount as a hard drive when connected to my mac via USB.
The MyCloud iOS app is confusing and opaque. It is difficult to get any feedback on what the device is doing (i.e. show progress on operations and monitoring activity.
Hopefully I can figure out how to secure wipe the drive so I can return it and get my money back.
Top reviews from other countries
Cons: kinda slow transferring SD cards.
I shoot wedding films.
I collect the footage from my 2nd shooter at the end of the night while on-site.
multiple 64GB cards takes approx. 5-10 minutes each.
seems like an eternity :(
unless you login with your app, you never REALLY know if the footage is 100% transferred just looking at the LED lights. (they really should've made the lights turn green when done.....)
dont try and VIEW photos while transferring....totally messes with the connection....
otherwise, its a good product.
1. Read and write speed are fast. Both are consistent 120MB/s on a 8gb file transfer. It never dipped.
2. Great for chromecast. I have no 4k media but for 1080p content streaming, it is flawless. Only 4k I tried is a youtube video. A short downloaded 4k video on youtube was streamable on wifi but thats about it. Got 0 knowledge on 4k media so i dont even know if its true 4k.
3. Great device for sharing at home. It is easy to connect the drive to the wifi. Using the mycloud app, configure the wifi it needs to connect to and use 5ghz if you have devices that support it. On 5ghz ac, im able to get 19MB/s read and write a bit unstable. I noticed it fluctuates from 19MBs to 15MBs often.
4. Battery life is decent. I got 7hrs of mix use of file transfer and streaming.
1. So far nothing yet, just a potential. It's a hdd, just make sure it is stable and doesnt move around when it is on or transferring files.
On my test, I was able to get a consistent 120MB/s write speed on my device using my switch alpha 12 with a type c adapter.
Im able to share files if I connected it to my router. You can also encrypt it if you want.
For Android, make sure you got an app like es file explorer (before the version with weird permissions and bloatware) and mx player. Specially if you want to bypass the mycloud app.
Attached are the wireless transfers on android. To sd card image attached is the read speed and to ftp192.168 etc is the write speed from device to hard drive.
Setting up this product is no easy task, there no step by step setup guide in the box itself, I had to go and checkout YouTube videos from other people who had this device.
This product is very unreliable not stable at all with the app, here are the following reasons why???
-Need to connect to both wi-fi's your own network and the hard drive itself to be able to connect via your computer.
-50% of my Jpeg pictures , I was not able to open them, reason being from my iPhone XS max to hard drive, the hard drive would somehow interpret them as HEIC file, which made no sense, and not able to open the file in the app itself.
-2 min 4k video playing right off the hard drive would buffer every 2 secs very very frustrating in fact all 4k videos it would do this , 2 to 4 mins long!!!
-Exit app and go back in , go to storage files it would take 2 min to load my folder of 40 pics and 5 videos, and somehow the video files would not be able to play again.
-Charging the device takes a very very very very long time, 1 dot takes 2 hours or so and you have 4 dots in total
go figure total time.
-turning off the device , it is trail and error, took me so time.
-Hard drive inside is always spinning , even with no activity.
-The box itself heats up too, not long after you use it.
This hard drive will be returned back to Amazon today!!!
Update/Edit: Recieved a replacement unit from Western Digital, same problem. Decided I was going to bite the bullet, not return the first defective unit and do some inspecting of my own.
After opening both units, which is almost impossible(thanks WD for that) I took each of the HDD's and plugged them into my PC to find that they are completely unreadable. They are no detected in the Windows, Mac, or Linux disk utilities, nor do they even show up in any BIOS.
TL;DR These devices have an incredbly high chance of having completely dead hard drive inside of them, WD needs to do more than just power on the unit as a test. As someone who constantly purchases WD drives, this has really made me reconsider buying any more from them.
