Though I rather enjoy a more adult PNR genre book, this book was actually really entertaining. The writing was fluid with only a few minor errors. The story was engaging and the characters were likable. The story is based more on mystery and problem solving, there is one extremely mild sex scene and some mild violence, actually quite perfect for the YA crowd. Though I really didn't get an emotional connection to the characters, or feel like I was pulled into the story it was an enjoyable read. There are times when throughout the book it feels like your being told what's happening rather than feeling what's happening.
If you're looking for a light entertaining read with some suspense and mystery give this book a shot. However if you're looking for something you will get emotionally attached to, this might not be the book for you. This I would peg as a beach read, just a simple story to pass the time. I look forward to reading the other 2 books in the series she has out.

CS Winchester's "Past Due" is a romantic, urban-fantasy mystery placed in London. In it we find a major component of the paranormal and magical. Our main character is Frankie (Francis Wright), the psychic, who is supported by Alex (Alexander McNabb), the vampire.

Two killings bring them together, and the two of them end up working to solve the mystery of what seems to be serial killings with magical components. Frankie is part of MI5 (they control the paranormal population). Alex is not. He happens to own a nightclub. However unlikely it might seem that these two should work together to solve a crime, they do. In fact, the two of them end up becoming more involved in each other's lives than they had originally thought.

The world of "Past Due" seems to be a man's world. Except for a phone conversation with her mother, Frankie is the only woman we get to meet (other than the corpses). Her mother provides the comic relief of the story with what I presume is a common mother/daughter phone call:

... "Well you know, even large age gaps can be overcome. Felicity, from my bridge group, married a man thirty years her senior. Of course he was loaded, hardly a match made in heaven, but at least her husband died happy."

"Well, I'll just pop down to the bingo hall, shall I? See if they have any octogenerians?" ...

Some resemblance is purportedly found between Frankie and CS Winchester (VLA). What do I know about Frankie? She is adopted, psychic (reacts to touch), in her 30's, works for the paranormal police, wonders if a relationship with a vampire is doable, is independent, has a mother who does not believe that Frankie is psychic, has been thought insane and cares for the victims of her cases.

I liked this book. I like Frankie, with her crazy quirks and all. Frankie's relationships with others are fun to read about. I like that she is using her curse/gift to help others. I loved the draw to Alex. Alex is a vampire that no one apparently thinks truly exist. I think it's funny that Frankie asks him all kinds of questions about vampires. The book was fun to read and really drew me in.

I pick up a lot of cheap books on amazon because I'm sick of paying $8-12 for a single book. A good portion of these $0-3 books tend to be a bit of a disappointment. The authors are pretty unseasoned and the writting is just poor. I didn't have high hopes going into Past Due but boy was I wrong. This was a very well written book. The characters were interesting and the dialogue was great. There were more then a few typos/puncutation/editing errors but I tend to ignore these. I'm very happy with this book and I'm looking forward to the next two.

I loved this book. I was hooked before the end of the first chapter. I couldn't put this book (kindle fire) down. My husband had to make me put it away at night so I would sleep.

I really liked Frankie. The ability the author gave her was strange and awesome at the same time. I could feel the pain she felt when using her ability. Frankie, working with M15, causes her to cross paths with a man from her past. Then here comes the things that go bump in the night like vampires, zombies, witches, and shiftshapers. What more could you ask for.

A must read series for paranormal fans! A little of everything in Catherine Winchester's fabulous "Past" series. I look forward to what and who Frankie meets next with each book. This is a series I hope the author continues for years to come. Already waiting on next book!

I was thrilled after the first chapter! Winchester's writing style is smooth as silk. The characters are quickly fleshed out and engaging with abundant personality. And the story moves forward at the perfect pace. I love urban fantasy, but so often it is poorly executed, unedited, knockoff drivel. Not so with this one. Past Due is a real jewel. This author can hold her own with the big girls (Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris, and the early Hamilton). I finished this one last night and started Half Past this morning. I'm pretty sure this is the beginning of something wonderful! Keep them coming, I am looking forward to this ride!!!
