Needless to say, as with her thrillers I was utterly swept away by the characters she brought to life in this lovely story. I really liked Nicole, a single mum with a strong, tenacious character and a sharp tongue. Her life is devoted to her daughter Sammy Jo and her successful hairdressing business.
One day Nicole's world is turned upside down by the arrival back in town of Josh Holland, the love of her life, the only man she had truly loved passionately with all her heart. Ten years earlier, however, Josh had left her without a word and she never saw him again. She was abandoned with a thousand unanswered questions. Now that he's back, she is not sure whether she wants to see him again or not.
Josh is however determined to win Nicole back, but before they have a chance to trash things out between them, something terrible happens and the prospect of a fresh beginning is seriously put in jeopardy.
This was the first romantic suspense novel I've ever read and must say that it was an easy, enjoyable read and I was left satisfied. Having had a great time reading it, I will surely be waiting for the next one in the series.
Ms. Comley's writing skills are evident from the first page, through the opening scene of Nicole and her sister, Christine (aka "Chrissy"). It is established quickly enough that Nicole is a struggling but hardworking hairdresser who had "no man" to thank for the things she has in life. This immediately makes me interested in the female protagonist, unlike the commercial romance stories where the lead female character often has very little real personality and excessively defines her self-worth through men or her relationships (I think everybody has a unique personality that's defined by their own experiences--which includes but is not exclusively made up of romantic/sexual relationships...at least that's what I hope!).
While I connected with Nicole very easily, I would have liked a bit more background information on her ex, Josh (like how he came to have his "distinct air of money" about him). I hope this will be explored more in the upcoming novellas in this series.
What made the story exciting for me was Nicole's internal conflict between her desire and her logic, and her decisions or thought process regarding the maturity she shows with being a mother to a young daughter. The dangerous situation Nicole finds herself in is a very believable one too, which grounds the story in realism without being too gloom-and-doom or heavy. That Nicole and Josh weren't annoying or sappy with their expressions of love and affection held the story together at a natural pace too. Sweet!
Nicole and Josh obviously had a relationship, at one time, and he turns back up in her life, when she's not expecting it.
Nicole is alone in her Hairdressing shop, when and intruder tries to rob her, and threatens her and her daughters life.
Nicole tries to struggle through, but with love in the background will she follow her head or her heart. And can Josh get back in her good books.
I don't want to give to much away as this is a short story, It's better to read and discover it for yourself.
This book is written brilliantly as expected from one of Mel's books.
And I am now eager to read the next one in the series.
Other novellas in the series:
Lost Temptation due out June 2014
True Temptation due out July 2014
Just Temptation due out August 2014
While I liked the story line and found it thrilling wondering what the robber would do next I would like to have known more about the back history of the characters and some explanation of why Josh's house was so big - where did his money come from? If there was any mention of what he did for a living, I missed it.
I wasn't really drawn to the characters. Nicole was understandably distant but I didn't feel a connection with her in any way. The only thing that I got about Josh was that he was very good looking.
I received a complementary copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
