Neil B. Wiseman’s self-perception is that of a pastor, or to use an older more affectionate term, a physician of souls. He sees life through the eyes of a pastor. This pastoral perspective has shaped his leadership of local parishes as well as his clergy development assignments in the church. This ideal of physician of souls also greatly influenced his ministry to students as professor/teacher/mentor, as university chaplain, and as dean of a Bible college.
He views his latest book—Agape Awakening: Living a Life of Holy Wholeness—as having an incredibly important message for our times. In that book he shows how most problems have spiritual roots. He says without a bit of flinching that God’s agape love stands ready to fan the flames of a much-needed awakening and to point people back to God.
Other books available from Amazon include Hunger for the Holy, Conditioning Your Soul, Maximizing Your Church’s Spiritual Potential, The Untamed God: Unleashing the Supernatural in the Body of Christ, and Leadership.
With H. B. London, Wiseman has been able to affect the ministry of thousands through their books: The Heart of a Great Pastor, Pastors at Risk, Pastors at Greater Risk, They Call Me Pastor, Married to a Pastor, Becoming Your Favorite Church, For Kids’ Sake and The Shepherd’s Covenant.
Other projects designed to help fellow ministers include the founding of Preaching Today, an audio ministry of Christianity Today, Inc. with more than 5,000 subscribers; founding editor of GROW magazine; and founder and director of Small Church Institute. With his pastor friend Dan Whitney, Wiseman has developed and continues to offer Soul Care, a two-part ministry of a daily (M-F) email devotional service to ministers and other Christian workers called “New Every Morning” and “Iron Sharpens Iron,” pastoral skills ideas, which goes out on Saturday twice a month. Written by H. B. London, Jr., and Neil B. Wiseman, the book contains three sections dealing with risks in the pastor's ministry, his family, and his personal life. It also features an interview between London and Dr. James C. Dobson who also wrote the foreword for the book.
The book has lots of statistics gathered from a multiple of sources that will give Pastor's and Elders a good idea of the risks that Pastor's face in their ministry. I was shocked by some of the statistics. The sexual failures are overwhelming.
Now, the book isn't necessarily written to be a down type of book. London gives the statistics but also gives good guidance for the Pastor on ways to overcome the dangers and to avoid the pitfalls that await them in the Pastoral Ministry.
This book is a must read for Pastor's. I think it is also a must read for Elder's so that they understand some of the pitfalls better and can help keep their Pastor's safe by keeping them accountable for their work and lifestyle.
Interestingly enough Dr. Dobson and author London are first cousins who grew up in minister's homes and have experienced what life in a minister's home is like both as children and as adults.
The book is divided into three sections: Where the risks come from; the risk pastors face in their own family; the risks confronting pastors in their own inner lives. Life today is far more stress filled for everyone than it was in the past. That adds to the pressure ministers face. One of the problems is that every minister is an individual and every congregation is different. The book goes in to many of the challenges which are presented to ministers and their wives. The increased opportunities for women make the life of the minister's wife today different from what it has been in the past. It seems clear that the minister who is happy in his work is one who has a well-grounded faith and a thorough knowledge of the Bible. He and his wife are building their marriage on the same foundation of faith and knowledge of the Bible. They need to observe the basics of good family living. A great asset is understanding friends who encourage and support.
This is not a book to be read at a sitting. It is a resource to consult and a stimulation for discussion.
