Product Description

The sun will sneak by a rooster before sports promoter Mike Conovan (Spencer Tracy) lets opportunity pass him by. So the first time he sees genteel Pat Pemberton (Katharine Hepburn) swing a five-iron, he decides to ink her to a pro contract. "Not much meat on her ," Mike later says, "but what's there is cherce." For this chercest of romantic comedies, George Cukor directs, Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin provide the Oscar -nominated screenplay, and a deft cast plays various Damon Runyonesque types, including Aldo Ray as a dim-bulb palooka and Charles (Bronson) Buchinski as a tough guy who finds Pat tougher. Sports stars of the day (like Babe Didrikson Zaharias and Gussie Moran) add to the Jocks-and-Jills fun. Let the games begin!

Tracy and Hepburn are always a hit. Here Tracy's character is perhaps not as likeable as usual- he is a bit controlling and plays more low-comedy gags. However, they still have their famous chemistry. The real draw here though is seeing Hepburn's athleticism. She performs in several different sports against real pros and sports stars of the day.

Hepburn was supposed to win the golf tournament, but one golf pro woman, Babe, insisted that SHE be scripted to win instead of Hepburn (a mere movie star). They rewrote the part to let Babe win! I had to see this film after reading a bio of Betty Hicks, one of the pro golf women cast here. Great fun.

This is a fun movie made in the day when fun movies were, if not the norm, much more so than today. It involves a Babe Zaharias-like woman athlete who falls into the hands, both figuratively and, eventually, literally, of a sports promoter who is none too nice about preserving sportsmanlike conduct. It has the attraction of featuring our heroine (Katherine Hepburn), protraying the absolutely greatest all-around woman athlete in cinema, competing in a golf tournament with the woman generally acknowledged to be the best all-around athlete in real life. Along with providing great entertainment, it also provides some great lessons in the importance of sports, sportsmanship, and even life. Great movie!

I rented this film because of Katherine Hepburn. I hate to say it was disappointing, but it was. The story just didn't work and the romance felt flat. The supporting cast was also terrible. I have no idea who Aldo Ray is but every piece of the movie he was in was horrible. Stupid is not funny. Overall, I would watch it if you love Hepburn as her athleticism is very impressive to see, but I wouldn't watch it again.
