Patagonia's reason for being: Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire, and implement solutions to the environmental crisis. Patagonia grew out of a small company that made tools for climbers, as a result Alpinism remains at the heart of a worldwide business that still makes clothing and shoes for climbing--as well as for skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, paddling and trail running. In each of these sports, the reward comes in the form of hard-won grace and moments of connection between the athlete and nature. Patagonia's values reflect those of a business started by a band of climbers and surfers, and the minimalist style they promoted; the approach they take towards product design demonstrates a bias for simplicity and utility. At Patagonia, a love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them, and to help reverse the steep decline in the overall environmental health of the planet. Patagonia donates their time, services and at least 1% of sales to hundreds of grassroots environmental groups all over the world who work to help reverse the tide, and they work steadily to reduce any pollution and harms caused by their business activity. They use recycled polyester in many of their clothes and only organic, rather than pesticide-intensive, cotton. Staying true to their core values during thirty-plus years in business has helped create a company the employees are proud to run and work for, and their focus on making the best products possible has brought success in the marketplace.

Easy wear, and casual but certainly not for the basketball court, mountain climb, power walker, businessman, on your feet at work all day, gym, or racer. It's something more than a flip flop but a whole lot less than a proper athletic shoe that actually has support and stability. The support and stability here is basically nil.
It's for a particular purpose that can be properly described as very light use. When it that? Perhaps walking around the house, or in a car, or on a very short bike ride, goofing off, around the pool, running the dog out for a short trip for you-know-what, and so on... It's a lightweight (almost temporary and disposable) shoe to put on your feet so you're not barefoot--but hardly a shoe for all purposes.
It's somewhat unfair to review a canvas shoe with no support and then find fault because it feels like an enclosed flip flop with no stability.
How long will it last? Not long. Does anybody expect a forty dollar shoe to last long? Oh please.
I couldn't care less if it wears out in 90 days and goes in the trash since I actually like the idea of new shoes often.
The single best brand of general shoes I have for daily wear and business attire for use all day are by ECCO from Denmark. They are terrific and well made. They also run about $160.
It has a big toe box, and is fine for walking the dog around the block or driving the car without the bulkiness or heat of athletic shoe. I like them enough that I am buying another pair now to save for later. On the other hand, nobody is making the claim that it's a great all-day shoe. It's a low-price-point unpretentious canvas shoe that does a good job at being just that, and not pretending to be other than exactly that.
I went with 4 stars since it seems like 5 is too much and reserved for something proven more to me. I might update the review later, and maybe change to 5 stars. Here I've rounded down 4.5 to 4, not up to 5.
I've got ten pairs of shoes. The ones you wear with a charcoal suit differ from the shoes you put on with a tux, to play racketball, to walk five miles, to go to a restaurant in the evening with a sport jacket, wear in the snow, wear in the ocean, or the rubber ones one wears in the garden to stand in mud. You want one shoe that does it all, forget it.
First pair was shipped missing one shoelace eyelet, so I sent back. The replacement pair has a sharp burr on the interior of one of the topmost eyelet, so whenever I pull the laces to tie these, the laces get shredded as they're pulled through the eyelet. I decided to file down the interior of the eyelet myself rather than deal with another return.
I really like the shoes, but was disappointed in the lack of attention to detail on BOTH of my pairs that I have come to expect from Patagonia.
