This is definitely what I would call a darker story than the last. Even from an artistic perspective it's dark--most of the backgrounds are just black, which really makes the characters pop and sells you on the idea of being lost in a dark forest. Storywise, there's a greater sense of peril and foreboding this time around. For the first time since this journey began, we're treated to an actual antagonist in the form of... well, I won't spoil it for you. Suffice to say that there are some very spooky characters in this book, and not all of them mean well. By the end of this installment, it's very clear that the Patchwork Girl's adventure is not going to be all sunshine and rabbit chases. But much like the first book, I don't feel that there's anything here that kids can't handle. One thing that keeps this from going too dark--and indeed, which seems to be one of the most endearing elements of the series thus far--is the interaction between Patchwork Girl and Poco. So much of the humour comes from just the clash of their differing personalities. But at the end of the day, you know that they're still friends and that they have each others backs.
Though this book is a bit shorter than the last one, it in no way diminishes the quality of the story. I assume each book will simply be as long as it needs to be. All in all, a very good read. I look forward to book three with great anticipation.
