I did read a few of the negative reviews about this book but I don't agree with anything they said. When you read those reviews keep in mind that people perceive things from their own life experiences, from the lens of their own personal issues and their own personality. Just because someone says it is a terrible book does not mean it really is a terrible book. It only means that that person sees it that way. So while I cannot guarantee that YOU will agree with my assessment of the book (a 5 star book) instead of with those who rate it one star, I am saying that from my "life experience" as a college career counselor who spent thousands of hours over almost 30 years, striving to find the best materials for my students to help them find the right career for themselves, that this the best book I have found. It is comprehensive, it is jam packed with dozens of tools and exercises, it is easy to understand and everything is well-explained, and the author writes as though he is speaking to you personally to guide you and instill confidence that you can find your right career path. There are several other excellent career exploration books out there (and I own them, too), and The Pathfinder must be included in this short list of the best.
This is not a quick read because it requires time for reflection. Beginning with your temperament and personality, there are self-assessments throughout the chapters to help you pinpoint your natural talents, aptitudes and personal preferences concerning job roles, job functions, talents and abilities. The final chapters are dedicated to the job search. This book is substantial with more than 400 pages offering practical and empowering insight into yourself, but only if you do the work.
On a personal note, I gave The Pathfinder to my husband who is retiring from a 30-year career with the same company. In many ways, he is like the young adult who's trying to figure out what to do next. We got a quote from a career coach who I've used throughout the years and the quote was in the thousands of dollars to coach my husband through the discovery process before developing a job search strategy. A career coach is, of course, an invaluable investment in yourself, as I know from first hand experience; however, I thought it would be more practical for my husband (who is a virgin to the job market) to prepare himself by reading The Pathfinder. I'll update this post once I can comment on his transformation. We DO plan to use the career coach eventually, but reading this book and doing the exercises will help expedite the coaching process.
The benefits you will receive from applying this book to your life will far surpass its cost. It will pay for itself many times because you'll know who you are, what you want, and how much you're worth. Best wishes in your career choices and job search!
