Author Nicholas Lore uses the techniques of his career-guidance network, the Rockport Institute, to make The Pathfinder a substitute for a great job counselor. Through goal setting, list making, and other techniques, the book leads readers though the process of deciding exactly what they want to do for a living and finding a way to make it happen. Lore realizes that people have different temperaments and decision-making methods, so he provides individualized advice to suit each one. He also understands that creating a new career requires courage as well as desire, so The Pathfinder devotes plenty of space to motivation and overcoming fears. While anyone looking for a new career will find direction with this guide, people who didn't know they were looking may decide to start once they go through Lore's probing self-examination process. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

You've got to do some work to get anything out of the Pathfinder but you'll be glad you did. It's not a fast read (though it is humorous and witty) and requires at least 4-6 hours of genuine brainstorming, test taking, writing and research included in the book (plus 8 hours or so of your own research about potential careers) to get answers.
Biggest take away: if you struggle with procrastination, the Pathfinder will help you get your s*** done! Lore has literally taught me how to get out of my own way and retrain my brain to be the person I want to be.
This is not a quick read because it requires time for reflection. Beginning with your temperament and personality, there are self-assessments throughout the chapters to help you pinpoint your natural talents, aptitudes and personal preferences concerning job roles, job functions, talents and abilities. The final chapters are dedicated to the job search. This book is substantial with more than 400 pages offering practical and empowering insight into yourself, but only if you do the work.
On a personal note, I gave The Pathfinder to my husband who is retiring from a 30-year career with the same company. In many ways, he is like the young adult who's trying to figure out what to do next. We got a quote from a career coach who I've used throughout the years and the quote was in the thousands of dollars to coach my husband through the discovery process before developing a job search strategy. A career coach is, of course, an invaluable investment in yourself, as I know from first hand experience; however, I thought it would be more practical for my husband (who is a virgin to the job market) to prepare himself by reading The Pathfinder. I'll update this post once I can comment on his transformation. We DO plan to use the career coach eventually, but reading this book and doing the exercises will help expedite the coaching process.
The benefits you will receive from applying this book to your life will far surpass its cost. It will pay for itself many times because you'll know who you are, what you want, and how much you're worth. Best wishes in your career choices and job search!
